Red face

If you go back through the topics on this disucssion board, the Palm versus Visor debate has already been covered pretty thoroughly.

Only you can know what's right for you. Why don't you read the messages and decide for yourself?

I think he just wants to be able "to do cool stuff" on his palm. He's not concerned about what his needs might truly be, and which product best satisfies them.

Palm IIIx=
4MB
Serial
IIIx screen
No Springboard Slot
Flash ROM
Standard Palm Color

Visor=
8MB
USB
Palm V screen
Springboard Slot
No Flash ROM
5 colors to choose from

The thirty dollar difference isn't all that much for what I see is a great upgrade from the IIIx to the Visor.

Well, i was in the same situation that you were...kinda. I wasn't sure whether to get a Palm IIIx, Visor, Visor Deluxe. I eliminated the Palm IIIx because of the screen quality. I really feel that there is a significant difference between the Palm IIIx and Palm V screen (used on the Visor's). I then looked into the differences between the Visor and Visor Deluxe. The only practical difference is that the Visor Deluxe has 8mb of Ram as opposed to 2mb (also comes in color and with a case...however, not significant). Being a first time PDA buyer, i decided to go for the Visor. Also, the Visors are not flash upgradeable, so i didn't want to shell out a large amount of money for Handspring's first product. Also, since i'm going to be carrying around the organizer everywhere i go, there is the potential to break it.

Hopes this helps you in deciding.

Well I am in the same situation as well... .Right not i decided with the Visor because of the hype... and that it has more memory and cool color.

What I worry about is the upgrade ability of the visor. can anybody advise whether that would be much of a problems.. or when need for upgrade comes, it will be time to get a new PDA.

I decided to go with the Palm IIIx for $218. (Sorry, folks.) With 4MB of ram, Palm IIIx is a compromise betw. Visor or Palm IIIe and Visor Delux. It was $30 cheaper than Visor Delux (and I wasn't sure what I would do with 8MB anyway), was a proven product, with upgradable operating system and memory expansion. You can add on as much software as memory will allow in either machine. Springboards on the Visor seem most useful if you're seriously interested in add-on hardware, rather than software. An interesting article to read on this issue is: http://www.palmpower.com/issues/iss...skeptic001.html
Maybe I'll take another look at a Visor after they are a little bit better time and user tested!! That's my humble opinion.

I too went with the $218 IIIx. In reality the Visor would have cost me closr to $300 by the time I added a serial hotsynch (I use NT), a decent stylus and get it shipped here.

My IIIx arrived last Friday, one day after I placed the order. There just isn't that much difference to wait for a month to get a Visor. I would rather do the IIIx now and wait and see where Handspring is in 6-9 months. If they come out with a product that changes the paradigm by then, by all means I'll look seriously at it. But the Visor doesn't do that, its just a IIIx with more memory and a decent add-on port. Right now I need an orgainizer.

i did the same thing for the same reason. Got a IIIx for considerably cheaper than a Visor Deluxe. Why wait the extra month to get the visor? What does it do for me that the IIIx doesn't? Especially since I don't foresee myself dishing out more cash for springboards. The USB advantage isn't a big deal to me; it's just a few seconds difference in sync time. The *only* advtange the Visor has for me is the extra memory, but I think 4 MB will suit me just fine for the time being. I'll get more if I need it. And maybe I'll get a Visor next time around, when they're available through online retailers and can beat Palm's prices.

The $218 Palm IIIx sounds like a great deal.

Where did you find it for that price?

Thumbs up

www.buy.com has the IIIx for sale at that price. One of the better places to check for price comparisons on Palm devices is: www.20-20consumer.com/

I chose the Visor. I have been a Palm user for over a year and a half. I bought a PalmPilot Personal and have since upgraded it with the 2MB upgrade. I never thought I would need 2MB when I started with the 486K that came with the PalmPilot Personal. Then I never thought I would fill the 2MB. Now I have decided to skip 4MB and go straight to 8. The Springboard slot was attractive as well. Though there are a great deal of Springboards still under development, I believe the number of developers is a sign of the potential strength the platform has. The colors are a nice touch, but I still chose graphite. Flash memory wasn't that big of a deal since I have never used it before. Otherwise I am happy with my decision. I was that the unit would be shipped in October. Until November 1 comes, Handspring has kept its word on all counts. Palm is a strong company with great products. Handspring offered me more for less.

Hows this....
If you sign up for an E-trade account they'll give you a $100 gift certificate from buy.com

Buy.com lists the palm IIIx for 218.95 less $100.00 is $118.95. Also, Buy.Com is offering free shipping this weekend.

I tried to by a PalmPilot several times. But none of the websites would mail to a Foreign country such as Canada. I thought we were supposed to have freetrade. Anyways I went with a company willing to do business with Canada. Visor actually has their answering service in Ontario. Don't blame us though for the problems. We aren't shipping - you guys were supposed to!

I guess I must be slower than a "post," but...
the Buy.com deal is compelling, but etrade doesn't send you the certificate for 60 days (acording to their site), which is longer than I want to wait (and waiting for the Visor is what's driving some of to Palms and/or whining, sniveling, belly-aching 2 year-olds (aside from Handspring's impressive display of text-book perfect marketing incompetence).
as for valueamerica, I seem to be the only one who can't find any information on their site about the $100 visa offer. At this point, I'm still sitting tight.

Just to be on the safe side, I'd stick with a palm product. It has a lot of support and has been proven repeatedly.
Visor is in its very first production.
As with anything, it has a very high possibility of bugs and defect yet to be uncovered. 6 week back order for new units, imagine the wait for them to repair it if you sent your unit in!
As for you, dmkozak, I hope you get the visor. Like someone else said somewhere in these postings, that'll be the worst thing to wish on you visor fanatic.

Check out Valuamerica. You can get up to 120 bucks off of a Palm IIIx. Price is then $149 for a Palm IIIx. Follow the threads in "off-topic" for an explanation of how to get this price.
