I ask, as you might have guessed, because I would like to be able to interface my Visor with said phone. I've heard that most(if not all) cell phone in north america have no IR capabilites, even if they have an IR port showing.
are there any exceptions to this?

Most higher end GSM phones sold in NA support IR. For example Pacific Bell (the GSM carrier for California and Nevada) sells the Motorola Timeport, Nokia 8xxx series and Ericson T18 (which does IR with the DI28 add-on).

It clips on to the bottom of the phone and adds an IR port/modem to the phone. I have the previous model (DI27) which clips on to my 788.
