Question Need a project idea -- Any Help Appreciated!!!

Okay everyone-

I need to create a tangible, working project and I need some ideas. It has to be a unique product. It can be an upgrade or revision of a current product, it just has to make it better or make life easier. It cannot be a service.

I'd like to find a project that helps disabled or elderly, or increases their way of living.

Any tips would be appreciated. One example is salt and pepper shakers w/ braile on them. The prof really liked the idea, and it was very simple to make.

Just remember, that I need to actually make this...thanks!!!

Is this a homework assignment?

If so, talk to someone that is blind/sight impaired or elderly, and ask them what they are frustrated with in daily life.

To be honest, there probably aren't a whole lot of blind and/or elderly users on this site.

it doesn't have to be something regarding elderly... it was just an idea.

It sounds like you are asking us to do your homework for you.

I think the point of the project is for you to excercise your creative problem solving skills. Asking others to come up with the idea isn't doing you a whole lot of good.

Take an hour a week and go visit some folks in a rest home. Pretty soon, you'll see all kinds of things that they need to make their lives easier.

I find it humorus whenever someone wants to make something to improve life they always first think of elderly and disabled. There are plenty of other people who don't fall into those catagories that are still in need of things. By the way what class is this for?

I work with the disabled for a living, and I applaud your desire to help. I also agree with Recordond that there are good projects that would benefit ALL of us. In the field of 'adaptive technologies' we talk about 'universal design'- designing products that benefit EVERYONE, like kitchen tools with better handles (the Good Grips line, for example).

Look for common pet peeves- shampoo bottles and conditioner bottles that are hard to tell apart, round doorknobs that are hard to work with wet or full hands, the difficulty of holding and using soap...

Or, go to a favorite hobby or activity and look for ways to make it better. I like to camp, and would LOVE a functional 'messkit'- insulated cup with a sipping lid, insulated bowl with a lid, insulated plate (possibly with a cover), and silverware that can all pack together tightly.

You like electronics? How about a safe way to hold solder in your mouth for those times you need an extra hand and those dumb vises won't work right?

What bugs YOU or your family? Shopping bags that rip open? Dumb alarm clocks that can't let you sleep to a soft station then wake you with a loud one?

Madkins007,

Thank you for the response! I decided to do a dog poo catcher (like a horse poo bag) but for dogs. It actually looks really cool for demo purposes.

thank you so much. this class was for business policy
