Heres the deal. Every time I change batteries (which is roughly once a week as I use NiMH), my visor freezes up and requires a soft reset. Fortunately, I don't lose any information, but its becoming really annoying to have to reset the machine every time I insert new batteries. I don't wait a long time to actually insert the new batteries, probably get them in within 30-40 seconds after removing the old ones. Has anyone else had this problem? Should I try to get a replacement Visor from Handspring. I'm tempted to do that, but I hear their sending out refurbished units, which always scares me.

Needing to reset after installing new batteries does not seem normal to me. Are you running and hacks, specifically any that monitor battery performance? If you're not, then I'd suggest contacting Handspring.

Every time I change my batteries and power the unit up, it turns on, the screen goes blank for a half-second, the Applications screen (actually, the screen with all the tabs in Launcher III) comes on for a half-second, the screen goes blank again for another half-second, then I get the preferences screen. I run Runtime and ATool! both, along with a few hacks and the aforementioned Launcher III. This could be related to your problem, though in my case it's almost as if the Visor soft-resets itself. (I don't get the Palm Computing Platform logo screen, so maybe it isn't a true soft reset.)

Do not take both batteries out of the Visor at the same time. Take the first old one out, put a new one in and then take out the second abd one and replace it. I've been doing it that way just to try to cut down on any loss of info. Although I know it retains a charge even if the batteries are taken out. Just a precaution.

I think I've found the problem. I deactivated every hack and then activated one at a time, changing the batteries in between each set. I've been running the fitaly stamp hack, and that seems to be the culprit in making my visor freeze up after inserting new batteries. Has anyone else had this or similar problems with fitaly stamp?

Swendor,

Sorry to say, but that dosen't matter, the batteries are in serial configuration, you remove one, the circuit is broke, you are getting no power to your Visor. If they were in parrallel, it may work. General rule of thumb, if the batteries poles (neg and pos) are facing in different directions, it's a serial circuit. If they point the same way it may be a parallel config.

But it's okay, you almost have good while of residual charge in the capacitors. (try not to push it though)

The batteries may be serial but changing one at a time does work. I had a similar problem with my Palm Professional before I got the VDx. I'm religious about only swapping one battery at a time and I've never had to reset afterwards. Maybe it's just good karma.

It's GOT to be good karma, because if they're in series, it can't be anything else.
