GPS/Hunting

I was wondering if anyone here uses any fo the GPS modules while hunting. Are they worth buying, or would it be better to get a stand-alone device. Thanx.

Given that the GPS used in hunting is likely going to get at least wet, probably banged around pretty hard, and possibly dropped on occasion, a stand alone unit designed for that, like the Garmin etrex line, is probably a better choice.

Using the Nexian HandyGPS with Ubigo, the problem would be that of a almost total lack of landmark since their maps are street maps. You would know where you were in relation to the nearest highway, but not that there was a major cliff or river right in front of you.

Also, the fragility of the combinations, as already mentioned, would bother me.

I would use a seperate GPS for hunting or any backcountry activities, and maybe pack my Visor in a durable case to while away the long hours in the stand/blind and making records of what is going on.

I have just gotten the Delorme topo program and Solus 3.0. The combination allows me to download topo maps for anywhere in the US on to my Prism. Solus works fine with the Magellan module. Together they will tell me where I am and record my path along streams. I plan to use this combination for fishing and general hiking. I may, given the low prices, buy a rebuilt visor deluxe and use it along with a plastic bag for bad weather. For now, however the Prism combination works great.

I don't hunt with my VDX/Geode GPS combo, but I do go Geocaching (geocaching.com) with it.

I've had my VDX/Geode GPS combo in the snow (many times), rain (more times than I care to recall), heat, wind and combinations thereof. I've never had a problem, though I do try to make sure that I'm not pointlessly exposing my Visor to a lot of rain. For awhile I was carrying a zip-lock style baggie over the VDX/Geode GPS that was quite nice, but now I just try to avoid the rain. The screen was too difficult to read through the ziplock baggie + rain.
