I just recently did a swap with YY and received a new modem. Unfortunately, the didn't give me one that had the bare bones software on it (Novatel only).

So, I went back to square 1 with my fatal exception errors... and man, I just can't understand why the clamor and the discussion has died down.

Did someone solve it? Was their software released that no one said anything about...

I got a new modem from them - my original one had a bunch of problems.

The fatal exception issue came up, but rarely, more rarely than it seems to have come up with other folks. My problems were more an inability to get and/or keep a connection.

The new one works much better - better connections, more stable, etc. So far, no "fatal exception" problems.

I use YY for my connection but I do not use their software. I use AvantGo, BrowseIt and JPSPQA for browsing purposes. BrowseIt is the same as the YY browser except for it being in color. Unfortunately, My YY has more QuikSnaps to pick from than My Intellisync, but when you have them both installed, the entire list of Snaps goes into both browsers.

Mine has suddenly developed a habit of just freezing when I pull out the modem (and I always go back to the launcher app first). I can't even turn it off when it does this. I have to do a pin reset to get it back. Anyone else been able to solve this.

I'm unclear - do you also power down the modem first, either in the Minstrel app or the Power Switch app?

It's not enough to exit to the launcher screen, you need to power down the modem as well before extracting it.

Yes, I shutdown the modem from the Minstrel app, then check the Power Switch app just to make sure the modem is off, then go to the Launcher app, then pull out the Minstrel. What used to happen is the screen would flash off for a second, then comes back, just like pulling any other module; starting about a week ago, the screen would not flash off when I pulled out the Minstrel. It would just sit there frozen. The first time it happened, I didn't even notice it, but when I went back to my Visor an hour later, it was still on. That's when I noticed that it was locked up.

I deleted any programs I added just before the problem began (BackdropEZ/TrapWeaver, BugMe Messenger), disabled all hacks, and still the problem persists.

I've actually resorted to just shutting down the Minstrel and pulling it out without going to the Launcher app. This immediately resets the Visor, but I would have to do that anyway. At least this way I don't need to unscrew the reset pin from my stylus.

Sounds like you have a bum unit.

The interesting thing about my new unit - when I pull it out of the Visor (after powering it down first) I get a flash screen with text that says something about uninstalling or extracing the Minstrel S (I can't remember the exact words). It then returns to whatever I was looking out before I extracted the module. My original unit did not have this screen.

Fixed my problem. I just moved all the programs I had loaded into my Minstrel (Blazer, E-mail, etc.) back onto my Visor's memory. The good news is it fixed the problem, the bad news is there's 2 MB of memory in my Minstrel that I should be able to use, but can't.

Question HELLO? ANYBODY THERE?

That's weird. I have yet to hear that to be a solution. I can give it a shot, but I really make good use of my 2MB.

Also, does anyone know if Novatel or YY posted anything yet? It just seems like everyone who got the YY in the beginning had all these problems, and now you never see it mentioned on the board.

I'm using a good chunk of my Minstrel's memory, without any significant problems.

I'm using all of my minstrel's memory (besides 32K) without any problems at all.

Thumbs down

Even with latest update, still find the only safe way to remove modem is a soft reset and immediately remove module. Even when always powering off first, have on occasion received a hard reset and loss of data. Maybe I need to get modem replaced? Anyone else still having similar problems?

all the time... all the time. I want to leave it in forever so I don't encounter the removal-freeze. I can admit that I can power it off and on without any freezes.

although, I just jinxed myself.

cross your fingers, novatel will be releasing an update.

"dear novatel,

In your update, could you flash the memory so I don't have to have the yadayada software anymore?

Thanks,

Wireless Addict"

I haven't had any time to pursue my Yada "stub" idea.. where you essentially rename Blazer or Browse-it to YadaBrowser.. etc.. so it won't keep installing the less then helpful Yada programs over and over..., in theory you could rename any smaller program, this doesn't get rid of the root problem, but it should fool the yada "borg like" installer into thinking they are already there.. the problem is you can not just simply rename the PRC file, but you actually have to edit it with a binary file editor or resource editor to change the name internally..

great idea... and I see what you are talking about.

Here's a contribution, how does Launcher III from synsolutions allow you to rename a prc?

www.synsolutions.com

I also have a copy of a future release if that helps I can tell you how that operates.

Angry I'm still having my crashes

I have a VDX with YY Minstrel S, and I get the crashes all the time.

It's the most annoying thing, but it's become a regular part of my Minstrel S experience. It's like backpain....it hurts but you still live with it.

You guys are lucky if you're not getting the crashes.

Here's when it happens to me:

I power down....it crashes usually 95% of the time. After that, I pull out the modem and use a pin to reset the VDX.

I thought I may have had a fix, but this is probably not recommended---> Just pull the Minstrel S out of the Visor. The "Removing Minstrel S" screen comes up, but I rarely got a crash. However, I figured this might not be a good idea to do too often.

I hope there is a fix soon. My contract ends in December....there should be other solutions by that time!

Mike

Your problems are almost verbatim of mine. No clue how to solve.

I gave up on their customer service.

I still get crashes, as well. But now I have an idea. I was just browsing PalmGear in the Handspring: Springboard section and came across a program calledFirstBase that allows you to view ALL file on your device, including the SB ine the slot. The program description said it could also delete files. So I said what the heck I 'll try to delete some of these unwanted YadaYada files on the Minstrel. I installed it, tried to delete the YadaLaunch only to have it tell me that I need to register in order to use the delete function. ARGHHH!! It costs 12.00 but I don't know if it will delete these file or not. I would love to try it but this is the only thing I would use the program for as it is a developers tool.

What do you guys think?

I was thinking about using RsrcEdit.

I'd becarefull not to delete anything from the minstrel, the program that copies those files may crash if the files are missing, and if you remove the copier program, it could cause the minstrel to not function after the next hard reset as it may also copy to the Visor files that allow the minstrel to operate.

That's why I was looking at the stub idea.
