Question win2k IR sync on the Edge

do we have any leads as to when handspring will release an update so that you can IR sync in win2k? or is there any other way so that we can sync in win2k.

For reasons I still don't understand, Microsoft didn't implement the entire IrDA specification in Windows 2000. Therefore, there's nothing Palm, Handspring, or anyone else can do to make IR HotSync work in Win2k. You'll have to use 9x or XP if you want that functionality.

No IrDA Virtual Serial Ports

Service packs?

Has anyone checked the service packs for an update on this? Not that I hold out much hope for something from Microslosh, but it's worth checking. Also, I should think someone could set about writing some sort of driver... not as easy as coding for Palm OS, perhaps, but Palm OS developers are certainly determined people...

Question Not quite a full hotsync, but...

It's not a full hotsync solution, but Pinstall allows the installation of prc/pdb files thru Windows 2000 & infrared. That would seemingly lend to the fact that it's possible.

Wink

You can get IR to work with Handspring devices and W2K. It's a
little unorthodox and not officially supported.

1. Uninstall the Handspring version of HotSync.
2. Download and install Palm's new version of Palm Desktop (4.x).
Do not attach a cradle.
3. Go to the Wireless Device folder in W2K and uncheck the
box that says you want to sync with your digital camera.
This apparently ties up the IR resources.
4. Setup HotSync on both the laptop and Handspring to use IR.

You then should be able to perform an IR Hotsync. At least I'm
able to. Using IBM ThinkPad T21 and various Handspring models.

Talking

I'm too chicken to try this out.

Any brave fellows out there? Can we get a second or third confirmation?

Heh.

Thumbs up Confirmed!

It works perfect! Linuxopus is spot on!

I've installed Palmdesktop 4.01 (which, BTW, required no special mod) and HotSync Manager 4.0. NOTE - NOT USING 3.1Hb.

Turned off the digital camera setting in the "Wireless Device Link" settings, activated the IR Sync on both the Edge and PC, and they ran first try.

Note, I use a laptop (T20) and did not have the cradle connected. I also de-activated the USB sync option in HotSync Man.

Then what this all means is that Handspring just has to update their Palm Desktop/HotSync manager software to the latest version (4.0). Once they come up with an update, then we'll have a fully support means of hotsyncing in Windows 2k, Is this a correct assumption?

Handspring most likely will not release the desktop 4.01 and hotsync Man 4.0 until they feel they can support this combination across all support platforms and devices.

When will they do this? I dunno...

Do you have a W2K IR Hotsnyc solution now? Yes, by following the mehtods above - but it is at your own risk. I've been running this combination since my last post with ZERO problems - which includes running Notes Pylon, AvantGo, PInstall and a few other custom conduits.

Question follow up question

additional question, can you still do a USB sync with Palm Desktop 4.0? this is such a stupid question. (too chicken/lazy to try the suggestion above)

You bet! I've have both the IR and USB active on my HotSync manager. No problesm to report... and I just included WordSmith 2.01 - again, no problems.

From Handsping's web support:
How do I configure my handheld to synchronize with my Windows 2000 desktop using infrared?

Handspring does not currently support infrared synchronization with desktop computers using Windows 2000. To synchronize your handheld with a desktop computer using Windows 2000, you should conduct either a USB or Serial synchronization.

Support for IR HotSync operations using Windows 2000 will be added as soon as possible. We are working on incorporating this functionality currently. Estimated date of release is 15th August 2001.

You can do it NOW, as noted in this thread (above). Yes, it's not supported by Handspring; Risky? Maybe; Worth it? 120%!

Good news. This is one day away. Guess we'll see.
