I can't believe I'm saying this, but . . . 8mb is not enough. (Just like 1/2 mb wasn't enough, and then 1mb, and then 2mb, and then 4mb . . . ) Could we get a summary of the options for non-technical (ie, I'm not cracking open my case!) folks like me?
The big memory hogs on my Prism are AvantGo and SplashPhoto - about 3mb of each. And I could use a lot more for SplashPhoto! I suppose with sufficient extra memory I would be likely to carry a lot more doc files too. Here are the issues as I see them, in order of importance (to me, anyway!):
1) Price
2) Ease of use. Three subissues that I'm aware of:
a) File transfer. I hear that the process of transferring files from storage to the unit's RAM is essentially invisible to the user on the TRG/HandEra and the m500 series. That sounds good to me - is there a way to make that happen on a Prism?
b) Hotsyncing. I have also heard that some memory expansion devices don't hotsync well. I would obviously like to keep my huge AvantGo and Splashphoto databases on the expansion device, but I need to be able to sync them somehow. I vaguely remember someone saying this was a problem for AvantGo.
c) Need for empty RAM on unit. How much empty RAM do I need to leave on my Prism? For example, when I access a Splashphoto image or an AvantGo webpage from the expansion memory, is it just that image/page that needs to be copied into RAM, or does the entire Splashphoto/AvantGo database need to get copied into RAM?
3) Impact on battery life. Does having/using extra memory cut down on my battery life?
4) Speed. Does the unit slow down appreciably when it accesses expansion memory?
Thanks for the advice. I realize that at least some of this has been written up in various threads here, but a good summary would probably help all of us.
