Is there a hack available that will remap the hardbuttons?

I notice that hitting the date button opens DateBook, not DateBook+.

I would also like to map a hardbutton to kick off Hotsync, as I use IR

You don't need a hack for that, just go to
the Prefs application found under the System category, select buttons from the pull down menu at the top right corner and assign any application you want to the buttons.
