I finally bowed to the pressure of historical inevitability and dumped my Netscape for IE. Now it seems I can't turn on the browser without getting a window asking me if I want to buy a PC camera or some other junk. How do I stop this?

I had a similar problem and thought it was IE too. If you're not using AOL, have you downloaded any free software lately- ie. PCDJ? A lot of them have the added nifty feature of exactly what you mention- ads. They actually tell you this way down in the fine print of the contract. I had to dismemeber PCDJ and scrub it from my computer to get the ads to stop coming on.
Good luck!
Michael

Arrow IE

That actually has nothing to do with IE. It is just the "new" way to advertise at most big sites now. An ad pops up when first visiting a site. Porn sites started this craze (not that I would know).

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's not site-specific, most often its for the xj-2000 (or something like that) camera. very annoying.

Actually, I think it _is_ site specific (because it's usually the same sites that cause it, IME). I think it's just that those friggin camera idiots buy a lot of ads.

it is site related. Even Microsoft has these ads popup from their site.

Thumbs up Filter out the annoying ads

I used GuideScope to block unwanted ads. The website is www.guidescope.com

Norton Internet Security has ad blocking as well as offering a firewall.. Something very important if you use a broadband connection..

I use it's (pre Norton acquired) predecessor, AtGuard..

It is site specific, but sometimes it is hard to tell which site is causing it.

A new trick it to pop-up a very small window BEHING your current window. There is a timer in this tiny window that will eventually trigger a large pop-up window with an ad in it. By the time that ad pops up, you're most likely on a different web site.

The easiest way to shut this off is to turn of Javascript in your web browser, though that can severly limit what you do on the internet.

Site-specific, also can be triggered by cookie presence...

Go get AnalogX's Pow, which has a smaller footprint as GuideScope.

Unlike Guidescope, which is service-based, you will have to manually add and delete pop up windows with Pow. No need to have trust or privacy statements or the like.

aw man, that's cruel.
It's unfortunate that these sorts of advertising tricks and traps haven't be outlawed.
