Well, whadya know! They did fix the Eject disk command.

Lennonhead - you're right...I'm wrong.

And Sam, yes I, also waste time trying to find the CD icon on my desktop just so I can eject it. Thankfully, the new Mac keyboards now have the eject disk on the keyboard...MUCH easier!

If you want to get the full list of keyboard shortcuts (and a bunch of other useful tips and info) go to the help menu in the Finder and click on Mac Tutorials. There you can find keyboard shortcuts as well as a bunch of other stuff for Mac newbies.

New question: At midnight something pops up and is "Updating index of Macintosh HD". Is this Sherlock or what?

I have IE 5.0 (2022) which came with my Mac. It doesn't have the check for updates option that the Win version has. Is that the most recent version? Does the Software Update control panel only update system files, or can other apps use it (like Add/Remove Programs in Win)?

Yeah it's Sherlock. To turn it off go into Sherlock, go to the Find menu and select Index Volumes. Then uncheck the box next to your HD if you don't want it at all, or you can change the time.

Yep, Sherlock finds files on your computer by file name or content (which is why it needs to update � so it has current information about what's info is under which file name). I use Sherlock to search the internet, as well. The links it gives for the dictionary, encyclopedia, etc. I have found to be indispensible. The internet search is okay, but I like google better.

How to forward delete

On PowerBooks, forward delete is fn + f8. At least, on my G3.

All the keys that have printed text under them, which is ether yellow or the same color as the fn (function) key, preform different functions when the fn key is pressed before you press the key.

Use the keycaps program (found in your Apple menu) to look at all your keys and for a semi-charmap replacement.

If you want a good place to ask Mac questions, there is a non-profit group called PlanetMug which has a BBS that you might find useful. Right now, I think you can sign up for free (while they are in the process of reorganizing under a new non-profit board). Eventually, it's going to have a $50 per year membership fee.

That may seem a bit high but I've been a member for many years (ever since buying a Mac Plus back in the mid 80s) and gotten tons of helpul tips and troubleshooting from the folks on PlanetMug.

You have to get special FirstClass client software and a login settings file to connect. To get started, go to

Thanks! I found that Fn+Delete does it on my G4. That was starting to bother me.

The software update control panel only updates software included with the MacOS (as well as OS components). So it'll update Netscape or IE (since they both came with OS 9) but not Mircosoft Office.

it's still pretty early technology and can get flaky (e.g. sometimes it'll not list updated software that i know exists). I find it better just to disable it completely (takes up lots of system resources) and manually hunt for updates. versiontracker.com is the bestest mac web site for this.

Anyways, I just bought a new Powerbook G4/400. Whee. Can someone point me to directions on how to hotsync through the IR port? Is it slower/same than serial? Maybe it's worth it to keep the USB cradle handy? I xfer many many avantgo pages.

Syncing through the IR port is really easy on a Mac.

1. In the Hotsync Setup window, click on the Serial Port Settings tab.
2. Look at the "port" drop down list. Select "Infrared Port"
3. Make sure that you have "Hotsnyc" enabled

On the Palm Pilot, if it's running OS 3.5, just select "IR" from the local setup menu, or use IRSync software from... uh..., I can't remember the compnay, but it works really well.

Like most things, IR syncing is easy. Yeah, its as slow as a serial port, but, on the road, you can lose the USB cable. (Or in my case, USB card)

How do I associate files? If I double-click a .pdb file it isn't associated with HotSync Mgr.

I just have a shortcut to the "Files to Install" folder in my apple menu. Then to open it all you have to do is just click on it and move the file to install into it. There is no registry to dink with � the install folder gets synced everytime. It's not as quick as double-clicking, but it is quicker than reassociating every .pdb or .prc file. Each file on the mac has a creator code for the application that created it. Consciencious programmers change the code to match that of Palm desktop so double-clicking works. I've just gotten into the habit of installing all files by manually putting them into the Apple menu's Files to install alias. The advantage of the alias being the apple menu is it is always on top and can't be covered by any open windows.

As usual I'm sure some other mac users will chime in with an even better way that I don't know about, but then that's the price you pay when you don't get a manual with your computer.

And is it me or is AvantGo unbearably slow sometimes? I've had it vary from 40 seconds to 900+ seconds on my DSL connection.

Well, there are a few things I prefer in Windows more than the Mac OS!

I don't really like the way the Mac handles file creators. On the Mac, extensions are not necessary. All of the creator information is kept in the file's resource fork. This was cool way back when when you didn't need to worry about Windoze users, but today, it is fairly important that even Mac users use consistent file extensions.

Anyways, the only way to change a file's creator code is to use ResEdit, which is a bit of a pain.

What I use is a free program called Zmac's Quicklaunch. It is a launcher program similiar to the one in Office on the PC (or like the icons in the START bar). This makes it really easy to just drag a file onto any one of your application's icons to open the file in the chosen application. Good-by apple menu.

I also use Dick's trick. Just make an alias of your FILES TO INSTALL folder and stick it on your desktop. Then, to install files, you just drag them into the folder alias.

Easy.

So, James, are you jumping to OSX next week?

I dont have 3.5. I have a Visor deluxe, not a Pilot dab nabit. I'll look for the IR palm software though...

Re: keyboard menu navigation: Connectix makes something called CopyAgent which among other things, provides keyboard navigation and shortcuts to every menu command.

Avant Go tends to stall forever on my machine if it's trying to access a server that isn't responding.

Also to add to the file extension fix/solution. You can manipulate application associations to filename extensions with File Extension control panel. But i think it only works with files that dosen't have a creator tag attached to it. In any case it's flaky as hell but i thought i mention it anyways.

I'm assuming that you didn't/don't have that problem when you sync avantgo with windows? My AvantGo sync varied dramatically, but the problem was a custom channel I had created. Sometimes AvantGo would be able to get the information and would fly, other times it would wait 60 seconds and then time out. Waiting 60 seconds for 10 pages made my sync time over 6 minutes (not as bad as your 15!). I just removed the channel and found a new site that I get my science news from. Big difference.

I don't know why it would vary from OS to OS, though.
