So is it worth it to get the memplug? Or should I get the Innopocket compact flash adaptor? I have a Visor Deluxe (OS 3.1).

I don't mind waiting for the memplug. What I need to know is: are smartmedia cards better than compact flash cards at all or does it not matter?
Thanks.

I think it's been noted CF is slightly faster, and SM cards are easier to scratch up, and short-out, or something?
Psnly, I'd go CF, as I already own CF cards. If you have SM cards, though, I'd go that way.
OTOH, the CF SBs may get added CF func. in the future (?), but I doubt SM will.

CF is indeed faster, but also consumes more power. Seriously, we're not talking huge files here so its not that big a deal. I've never heard about "shorting out" but they could get scratched I guess, if you're clutzy with them.

bkbk other claim that SM will not get added function is totally false, developers can sign up for a kit which allows them to run items off the card and there is already a launcher which can run programs off it (though in beta). I've seen the most progress in SMC. SMC also has a built in image viewer, backup, and movie player.

If you do get CF though, wait for that new InnoPocket module comming out the 1st.

Ooops! I've been outed.
But I didn't mean SW func. -- in this dept., you're right, I believe the SM SBs have taken the lead.
I was thinking more along the lines of other CF HW types. But now I remem. that the reason the orig. CF SB was "passive" to begin w/ was that it did not inc. the full CF pinout / spec. / config. So (to quote the late, great Kurt Cobain) nevermind.

If you care about Power consumption more, go for Memplug.
SmartMedia use much less power than Compact Flash solution.

If you care about Speed more, go for Memplug-CF, our compact flash solution is in beta testing period too. It would be ready to the market shortly.
The speed of this new member is slightly faster than other CF adapter on the market. And we have full set of software support.

If you care both
Get both of them.

Jeepers ... what an "if you don't like the weather (i.e., mem. solutions), just wait 10 min. and it'll change" enviornment in the PDA (esp. Visor) mkt. today, eh?
So much for the SM SW advantage ... uh, for at least the next 10 min., I'm guessing, eh?

If you come out with a MemPlug SD/MMC, I may get all three!

I don't want to kill the buzz about MemPlug-CF but is creating an active CF Springboard capable of working with CF peripherals something you're considering? Is it even possible?

For the MemPlug SD/MMC, who knows.
If more and more users support memplug and ask for SD/MMC solution. It will the next.
With our experience in SpringBoard Memory Solution. It is absolutely possible.

Memplug-CF will be available on the middle of June,
it is a true SB and support Type I CF memory card.
It is possible to have a TypeII compact flash adapter for CF peripherals. But the size maybe huge and also the power consumption maybe problem. Besides, each CF peripherals may need a software driver for it.
Considering a lot of SB module are already here. It may not be an good investment.

Pi, are your libraies the same? I mean, if somebody rights an app for a meplug-sm, will it work without any mods with a memplug-cf? This would be really great, and make the memplug a much better choice to write for for devleopers..

I want I want! I'll be glad to beta to.. I'm a great tester! seroiusly, I am! jsut 'mail me! I can't wait!

/me like PI.. very much so!

All the sotfware now developed for MemPlug-SM will still work on MemPlug-CF. So your investment on software will never be wasted.

Question Loading files directly to card

Can anyone tell me if any of the memplugs allow me to load files directly to the memory card? I have <500 kb free in main memory at the moment. This functionality would make 2 meg Visors MUCH more usable!

I too would like to know, as mridge asked, if files can be loaded directly to the card. PI, please don't tell us we must buy some sort of usb drive thingie to load apps up straight to the card.

Also, do the apps really run directly from the card like with a flash module, or are the files copied to ram first? How is the speed of the module when running apps directly from the card, is it comparable to the flash module?

I have been tempted to upgrade my visor to a handera or an m500, but if you can give me the functionality I want most from those devices for $50, I can't wait! I get to keep my keyboard and modem this way, yessss! Jesus, I think I might buy this thing and get a prism or platinum for my next device!
