Question

Here's my situation:

VDX, bought with USB for Mac

@Home-- iMac bloo-berry with ir. i've been
quite happy with my ir sync for months now
and I only use the cradle for when I have
a big download.

@Work-- new machine! Dell, win98 w/ USB.

Goal-- to be able to sync my mail so I can
take it home with me. Outlook Express all
primed and ready, and USB cradle brought
in from home. HotSync manager downloaded
and updated to 3.0.4. USB enabled.

Problem-- HotSync manager not showing any
option for setting communications to USB,
only COM1. How can I make HSM see USB? Did
I miss something?

Is that HotSync 3.0.4 from Handspring or 3Com? If its 3Com, it may NOT be compatable with the Visor USB. My understanding is that Handspring tweaked HotSyn for its own flavor of USB, hence the 3.0.2H version number.

Mebbe so, I don't know what that entails.
I assumed that this designation meant that
HS had the jump on Palm in terms of USB and
that was why Palm Desktop had to release
support for USB as a patch. .... in ANY CASE--- I am missing something altogether bigger in the picture here. I can't even get the Palm Desktop to give me a USB CHOICE. That option just doesn't come up. Only COM1.

Right-click on the HotSync icon in the system tray and you should see, at the top of the list, a Local USB option... make sure it is checked and that Local Serial is unchecked. There should be no further settings required for the USB HotSync.

the win/98 machine should find the USB cradle on its own. Put the Visor in the cradle, turn it on and then boot up the Dell. It should see that it has new hardware and BOOM you are up and running.

That's how it worked for me anyway

Do you have USB enabled in your BIOS settings? I once had a laptop that came by default with the USB automatically turned off in the BIOS.
