Question

I just bought a Thincom Wristband modem and tried to connect to my
ISP, but I didn't get very far. The modem didn't detect a dial tone.
I couldn't find anything that could be wrong in the settings (I use
the standard initialization string), so I wonder if it could be down
to the fact that I'm plugging into a European (Swedish) phone socket.

Has anyone had any luck with the combination Visor Platinum + Thincom
outside the US?

Any other hints? I'm most grateful for any help.

Lightbulb

American standard modems do not recognize foreign dial tones, so you will need to set your dial up properties to not wait for a dial tone...simply have it immediately dial out.

Hope this helps.

Arrow

I failed to mention that the way to have your modem ignore a dial tone is to add "&X1" at the end of the modem's initialization string.

loud,

you`ve to compare the different cables used in us and europe.
compare the plugs and change the cables in the plug. youll see it works. and even what genrl says is still correct.

Sorry, but I'm not sure how to compare the cables. To me, the Thincom cable looks similar to the one my regular phone uses and there is no problem with that. Could you please shed some more light on this?

Would it be a solution to get the adapters that Cardaccess have for sale?

There are two issues as I see it:
1. The first is how to physically connect the modem to a phone line. To do this, you will need to plug the American style RJ-11 phone cord into a wall socket. If the wall socket you are plugging in to will not accept the RJ-11 cord, you will need a phone socket adapter for which-ever country you will be using the modem in. For Sweden, this adapter would be a TDPT 151 and can be purchased through Teleadapt (http://teleadapt.com).
2. The second issue is how to make the modem communicate with the local phone signal. To do this, simply follow my previous instructions on how to perform a blind (no dial tone detected) dial up.

Incidentally, the Teleadapt website has some great information on connectivity all over the world. I don't work for Teleadapt, I only use them for a lot of my connectivity issues, as I travel quite extensively and am facing similar issues all of the time.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

Sorry...the link to Teleadapt didn't include the WWW. It should be http://www.teleadapt.com.

Wink

thats it.

youve choosen the easier and more expensive way genrl.

normally a rj-11 cord could not be plugged in, f.e., a german wall socket. you have to buy a rj-11 to TAE cord. and, thats important, you have to buy A MODEM cord. a german socket is often a NFN socket. for DATA SPEECH DATA. you cant use a modem cord at the F socket, the cables in the plug are at different positions. but you can change theese cables very easy - thats my way.
