I was under the impression that when you synched your Visor that everything on it was stored by the synching program.

However, in the betatesting of IRSync, I got a corrupt copy of the new .prc file and whammo I got nailed (hard).

Surprisingly when I resynched most of the programs that I had sent over didn't make it back. Some of them did, and some of them didn't. And there didn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it.

What I've been doing is having a folder on the desktop called "Palm Uploads" that I extract the files into, then add them to the sync program, sync, and remove them. Should I really be moving them to the Add-ons directory or something?

I see that there is also a backup directory under my profile in the Palm Sync program. Do I just dump the .prc files in there, or is there something else I need to do?

This has been one of the few problems I've had with resets (the other being the soft reset that the old IRSync caused).

Thanks for any suggestions.

I tend to copy the files into the Backup folder when I want to keep them. I don't know why, but I've had the same problem you're describing. Copying the files into the Backup folder assures that they're restored after a crash.

I also suggest getting "Applist". It's a small app that generates a memo with a list of every file on the PDA, in the order they were installed. That way you can go back through and make sure everything is reinstalled after a crash. A little tedious, but reassuring.

When your system HotSyncs, all data from the Main programs are backed up. Other programs are backed up only if they have the backup bit set. Problem with setting this is that the program is backed up every time regardless of whether any data has changed.

The best program for backing up everything is BackupBuddy. You may want to check it out.

Some programs back themselves up and others do not. I installed a bad PRC that completely crashed my Visor, and when I Hard Reset and then hotsynced, certain programs came back and others did not. I spent awhile reconfiguring my Visor like I had it before -- and also got backup buddy. Next time I crashed it (I install a lot of "questionable" prc's), all of my data was perfectly restored. It is really a _must_ if you intend on downloading 3rd party apps.

Hey, backup buddy it is then.

However, I can't seem to find it. It doesn't show up in the software list of Palm Gear or Palm Central, and there are a bunch of dead links when I look for it on a search engine. (Although I did find something to help you back up a boat)

Does anybody have a URL/FTP address to download it?

Thanks....

Superfreak,
Try http://www.backupbuddy.com/ . It's the homepage for the software. I also found it at Palmgear by looking in the Essentials listing.
