Question

How bad is the paint problem on the Prism?

Have any of you noticed severe peeling, or paint chipping off?

What has your overall experience been with the Prism?

Thumbs up

My experience with the prism has been wonderful! Use it every day, for work & pleasure(reading!)and I wouldn't be without it!

I've had no problems with paint at all(except for a self-inflicted boo-boo)

Anyway, if you have the funds to purchase one, I can highly recommend it!

I love my Prism. I will admit the first one had a bad paint job. It was not coming off, it just was not painted well at all. I returned it immediately. Kept my second one for four months until I dropped it. Fortunately I had the Best Buy extended warranty. Got my third one and love it too. The only consistent paint problem that I have seen is on the back at the bottom. The edges of the lip where the Palm Logo is must rub against the case and the paint wears off. It is not a big deal, but you would think for $450.00 dollars they would have used an alternative solution to achieve Cobalt Blue. Other than that, I have no problems at all. I would consider it a wise investment for anyone seeking a color PDA. If you do not want color then I see no reason not to get the Deluxe or Prism. The Deluxe is so cheap right now it is amazing. Good luck with your decision, I believe you would love the Prism if you owned one.

Cool

No, I don't have an Edge. Not anymore that is! I really did love it, but the never ending stream of problems that Edge owners were reporting here finally caused me to abandon it. Right now I am without a PDA. I'm giving the Prism some thoughtful consideration. Yesterday I was in my local Staples looking at the Demo model, and I have to admit, the display had me pining for color.

well the paint problem isn't that obvious...
yup the paint rubs off at the lip below the Palm logo at the back and is inevitable cos it rubs when you place it in the Hotsync cradle...

the other area where paint is more susceptible to rubbing off is the area around the handspring logo...
I looked at the Prism with my eyes at the table level, and noticed that the Prism touches the table only at that area near the handspring logo, so if you keep pushing the back of the Prism around on coarse edges, you're bound to get paint rubbing off, if not, dun worry it won't happen enuff to be noticed.

replacement

My first prism had paint rubbing off on the back, sides, and buttons. The replacement shows no wear yet and I have had it a month. 16bit apps are coming out and it is great.

2nd month on replacement, and it is worse than the one it replaced right now. I have rub marks on the up and down buttons, and the paint on the back is off on the bottm ridge and along where it rubs against the cradle when inserting it.

It does work great though. I'm hoping for a color edge to come out, and I'll then replace this one.

I think that the whole paint issue has been blown out of proportion. I think that some Prism's had a paint job that was unacceptable but based on what I've seen personnally and the posts that I've read on VC, most Prisms have really minor paint rub-off.

I'm on my second Prism and the only rubbing that each has shown has been two little spots on the rear botton of case.

OK, you can flame me now...

Paint half rubbed off of the up/down buttons (very noticable). Small sections of paint rubbed off on corners and back, mostly where it comes in contact with the cradle. (not very noticable)

I keep my Prism in a Rhodiana case.
After about a year of use, the only paint problem I've had is two tiny shiny spots on the back at the bottom, where the ridge peaks. Big deal.

The color is fabulous! While I personally find it debatable that color is worth the extra $200, if you can afford it you will love it.

not that bad... except the stupid colour is coming off some of the edges on the back!

I was so surprised it would come off easily... one would expect that they would have used coloured plastic instead of painted plastic.

I think it would be best for you to just replace the unit under the warranty if the paint isssue is a problem for you.
