A springboard pager that works even when the module is unplugged would be a definite obvious necessity. Even if it had to be plugged back in to view a message. (Athough, an LCD display for a pager is probably the cheapest component). But to have functionality cease when the module was removed would be a severe limitation on the Springboard multi-function potential.
