Talking

I just installed IBM's Infrared Synchronization software.. I have a Dell Latitude CPx, Win98 SE, installation was a breeze and it works like a charm. The cradle now stays at home!

Thanks to all for the information.. your posts have been a huge help.

I agree with Rolando: IBM Workpadsync works flawlessly. I downloaded the 4 prc files from IBM and the readme file (which tells you to turn off the "search for devices in range" option in the infrared device manager). And then, per Buffasaur's rec above I went into regedit and changed the virtual infrared port from COM5 to COM4 on my IBM Thinkpad 600 with Win98, and I am now cableless!!. I've been waiting over one year to find something to do with the IR port on my laptop. Again, what a joy not to have to carry around the cradle. And FREE. You others can keep waiting for IRsync to become available. The IBM stuff works and is available NOW and FREE! Now I've gotto get a IR adapter box and cable so I can print at work.

See ya. Gonna see how long AvantGo takes to sync via IR

Jon Bekenstein

Addendum: Once IBM WorkpadSync is installed, USB synching is lost. You can delete only 3 of the 4 PRC files from the Visor, and then the USB capability is restored. Unfortunately, the SerIrComm Library program is permanent and takes up 10K space.

Thumbs up

WorkpadSync works on my Winbook XL w/ Win98. No problems, but slow compared to USB. Always love to lose the wires.

Confirmed that you will lose USB sync-ability upon installing the files. Fine with me...it will keep me patient until IrLink 1.5 is available. I assume that I will get my USB syncing capability back then.

Do you mean that the IBM IR sync software works with non-IBM machines? I am trying to help my dad get IR syncing on his Toshiba laptop. Can I use the IBM here until his serial cradle or IRLink 1.5 show up? Where do I find the software? (I'll check the above posts more carefully to see if the location is mentioned there.)

That's exactly what I mean.. the IBM software works even though I don't have, to the best of my knowledge, a single IBM component either in my Visor or my laptop. The documentation seems to advertise the product as IBM-only, but it's actually quite generic and quite free. My thanks to Big Blue, by the way.

As for the address to get the software: http://www.palmcentral.com/product....5&catalog=1

( (c) Rolando on that one)

Unhappy

Help! Loaded the IRSync software, it told me to get the enhanced software from 3COM. Loaded the 3COM Software, did the reset, it locked up. I didn't feel like abusing the visor again, so I stopped trying after the hard reset.

Anyone have any words of wisdom to get me through this nonsense? The whole experience was a little depressing. But I'm keeping the faith... For now.

mesha: I have the same problem with the 3com update. I have done several hard resets and reinstalls with the same results: lockup.

Before trying IrLink, I tried IBM's Workpad sync. That installed OK, but it didn't work (would never connect to my Dell Latitude).

If anyone's got any ideas about getting either of these to work, I'd like to hear 'em.

Thanks

I figured out why I'm getting the lockup after loading the 3com software: I loaded all 4 prc files. You're only supposed to load "SerIrCommLib.prc". If you read the IS/Complete instructions carefully, they never tell you to install the entire 3com update, only that 1 file.

Anyway, IrLink is now working, but only with HP SIR @ 19.2kbps. For some reason, IrDA 1.0 does not work. I'm running Win95 on a Dell Latitude CPi laptop. Maybe I don't have the right configuration on my laptop.

I'm happy that I can sync, but I'll keep working on it until I can get it faster.

=================
PROBLEM SOLVED! I reinstalled my laptop's IR drivers off the Win95 CD and, viola! I'm now syncing at full speed with IrLink using IRDA 1.0. I bet Workpad Sync would work also, but that's a project for another day.

I don't quite understand... why would installing the Workpad IR software prevent the USB 'sync? Is there any work-around for this?

Question for jwbekens...

Why doesn't USB Sync work with WorkpadSync installed. Have you tried going into Preferences>SyncPanel and reenabling the cradle?

...or is it a software conflict?

Question

I have an issue with SERIAL not working now!

I need to use IR at work/road, and serial at home.

I'm (attempting to use) the IBM product.

I reenabled the cradle in the SyncPanel, and now my Visor says:

Unable to initiate HotSync because the serial port is in use by another application.

Weird, huh.

Deleting padhtall, syncpanel, and serircomm fixed the serial, but of course broke ir. (I couldn't delete irlib and am not in the mood for a hard reset )

Anyone else running both IR and Serial?

Would the other app on this thread (can't remember name right now) solve this problem? If so it's probably worth the dough

TIA

Newbie IR question....

I'd like to be able to hotsync to my laptop via IR. I installed the SerIrCommLib to my Visor, IR is enabled on my laptop (switched to Com 4 via the registry). How do I initiate a hotsync from the Visor? Selecting 'Hotsync' and 'Localsync' works for USB, am I missing a setting on the Visor to tell it to sync via IR?

Thanks in advance!
Larry

Cool

I installed the IBM workpad app that's mentioned earlier on this thread. One of the files you installed is called "syncpanel", which adds another menu item to your Prefs.

It allows you to select "infrared" or "cradle" for syncing.

The IR works great. Unfortunately the cradle doesn't (at least serial, I can't use USB), due to the "serial port in use" error I posted above.

USB will not work with WorkpadSync, probably a software conflict. But it does work for IR, and it's free. IScomplete's IrLink allows USB and IR syncing and will autodetect the cradle. Your have to disable the autodetect to use the USB travel cable (yep, I bought it cause IR syncing is so MUCH SLOWER than USB. However, I like having the flexibility of IR syncing, travel USB cable synching or USB cradle synching. IrLink (www.IScomplete.com) will do all three. It also allows for setting a time to do an autosync. I like that. IrLink is fine. The company's IrPrint leaves a lot to be desired. I have an IBM thinkpad 600 and IR syncing is convenient, if slow.

I got it at palmcentral, just search on "workpad" or use the URL below!

Klaw,

I had to download IR drivers for my thinkpad 770 from IBM's web site.

Also, my thinkpad came with IR disabled and Serial enabled. I had to use another IBM utility (also downloaded) to turn on the IR and turn off the serial (I don't use any true serial ports, so no problem for me...).

Every laptop is different, so I suggest a trip to the web site for yours.

Question

HI,

I have tried but with no luck with mu Thinkpad.

I have already installed the IR Driver for my 600E and had also enabled to IR Port. 8-(
I have already change the com port setup in Hotsync to Com4 as used by IR port.

I have also installed a QuickBeam Suite for NT and tried again but still cannot make it work for me.

The IR monitor of NT did not see any IR device even when I put my colleague's Win95 Notebook to test with it. But the Win95 Notebook did find my Visor though I still cannot do hotsync with it.

Anyone can help. 8-(

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Kenny

I have a Mac Powerbook 1400 (w/ built in IR port) and am considering installing the IS/Complete IR Sync program. Anyone used it on a powerbook? Problems? Just wondering.

I just read the "Undocumented Palm Info V2" by Brookes from http://welcome.to/dbnet. There are some words about Reseting Palm :
"Do a soft reset, and hold down the Up button. This will do a soft reset, but will not execute the startup code of the installed applications. Sometimes a badly written program will refuse to deleted from memory- doing this reset will let you pry it loose from your Pilot."
I've tried, and it works.
Hope this information helpful.
