Question

I posted this yesterday, but no response...and it turns out I am going to get my Graphite Visor Deluxe this evening. So, can anyone tell me what the deal is with Revision B? Any way if I should care if I have this, or if I can tell on the store packaging if it B? Thanks in advance for you quick replies!

You probably can't tell anything from the package. The Rev B should be what all new Visor's are... mine, purchase and received in January, is a Rev B. I'm not sure what it means, though. I wouldn't worry too much about it, though.

One minor difference on my Rev B is the Palm logo on the back of the battery compartment. I'm not sure why that's there.

Cool

If you have Visor Deluxe with an Ice back, you can see "REV B" on the back of your serial number tag.

Question

What's Revision B? On the back of my BVDx (received about a month ago), I can see REV A printed in reverse on the inside of the bottom Ice case, above the battery compartment.

On the batt cover itself, I see REV B. So what got revised? I do have the Palm logo on the battery cover also. Tough to see because of the serial # label.

I am still not clear on how to identify a Rev. B unit. I have a deluxe graphite unit and the s/n has no mention of rev. Any other ideas? Also what is the difference?

Question

just to complete the confusion:
My first GVDlx ordered mid-December and received mid-January had no PalmOS logo on the battery cover. The case seemed to be of better quality than the replacement units I received later (both w/ PalmOS logo on the battery cover and 'creaking case').
Does that mean that my first GVDlx was a Rev. A or what?
The replacement units, although looking brand new from the outside, are as far as I know, refurbished.

Any ideas?
To be honest, I am not that concerned about whether my Visor is Rev. A or B, as long as it works flawlessly...

To be honest, I have no idea what the difference between Rev. A and Rev. B is.

I can tell you that my Rev. B is absolutely solid. No "creaking case" problems here. (Although, I've noticed that a couple demo units had this problem.)

Based on some posts and reviews, I wonder if it has to do with the stylus. From what I understand, lots of people got a plastic stylus with their VDx, but mine is aluminum, with the reset tool and screwdriver (like the ones you get in the 5-pack). This is just a guess, though.

PaulD,

The reverse Rev A that you see is actually printed on the circuit board for the memory module. You are just seeing it through the clear (ice) plastic of the case.

I got my BVD in Mar. and there is no Rev. anything on the battery case nor a Palm logo.

Just peel back the serial number sticker on the back of the battery cover and you will see the revision code.

Keep in mind that each individual component of a Visor could have a different revision code. Some people have mentioned that their battery cover has a REV B stamped on it and that it also has a Palm logo. This could be the only change for that part.

Typically, when producing a product, different parts go through a different number of changes. Each of these unique parts has a different part number so the manufacturer can be sure assemble the unit with the correct version of each component.

I wouldn't be concerned about a REV A vs. REV B on the battery cover. If there were changes in internal components, chances are you wouldn't be able to tell if your unit (Visor, PC, new car, whatever) had the latest levels or not. Only the manufacturer would know for sure and that is assuming they track serial number vs. individual component levels.

I suppose you are right......it's just that you are dealing with people that always want the BBD. We are never satified with what we have because someone else has one that is bigger, faster, or cooler.

I'm sure the "rev B" refers to adding the "Palm" logo to the battery cover mould. The case itself is "rev a", and the MROM memory board is unrevised (part number is "03-0006-00 REV"... the revision code (A or B or whatever) would be stamped after the word "REV").

There is also a little "clock" with numbers. This is used for date stamping or for minor revisions... it's actually a mechanical part in the mould that's turned every month or manufacturing cycle.

I'm a bit confused by this too. I have a palm logo on the back of my battery cover. But, (reversed) I can see the REV A on the inside. So do I have a Rev B or Rev A Visor? Here's an image for those who are wondering what people are talking at. Hopefully it can help the discussion.

I'm pretty sure the box for the RevB units is different. Well, the box itself isn't different I don't think, but there are TONS of new stickers all over it that my box doesn't have (got mine Dec.99). The Serial Number, Color Sticker, and BarCode are now on The Right Face (when looking at the box' front), where they used to be on the bottom of the box (like mine). And there is a sticker on the top left corner of the front of the box that shows all 5 flavors of Visor Deluxe.

Vertigo, I think you are on the right track. Though the box I just bought tonight from CompUSA has the '5 flavors' sticker in the bottom right and a 'requires Win98 or Mac 8.1+' sticker on the left middle.

Well, that would go along with my Visor. I have the Palm Logo on my battery cover....can't see inside because I'm Graphite, and my box has the stickers on it.

But I guess what my original post was......What is Rev B? Aside from new stickers and a redesigned cover? I saw some posts about a golden screen....do anyone know anything about that. I can't say I have anything to compare my screen to except a dead Palm Pro........

OK, here's an experiment you can do. Open up any device you own that uses molded plastic parts. Here, I'll do it on an HP Jetstore 2000 tape drive. Inside the plastic faceplate:

code:
HEWLETT PACKARD REV (4) PIN C1520-4000 MADE IN U.K. MANUF-PLASTIC ENGINEERS -UL ASSIGNED CODE A1177

The (4) is a 4 in a circle, like the (A)and (B) on your visors.

You won't find this sort of thing on EVERY bit of molded plastic, but for complex molded stuff that has to snap together it's very common. It doesn't mean anything important to you, unless they start getting, say, battery doors that fall off, they can pull all the "Rev B" parts and replace them with "Rev C".

This plastic mold revision has nothing directly to do with the version of anything else in your Visor. Don't worry about it.

The Palm logo on the battery cover is more than likely a compatibly logo of sorts. Anyone know a buddy with a Workpad, or TRG Pro device? Check and see if it's on theirs. I know it's on the Palm Vx.

Think of it like the Windows logo you see on Windows software boxes.
