Birthday time and I get this My-Vox. Really good idea, but I have some observations.
1. This thing sux batteries faster than a modem...Using the battery graph on Launcher, The level drops from 50% to 18% and throws an alarm the minute the unit is in place. I put some new batteries(rechargeable thank goodness) in to put the unit through it's paces.
2. There is additional storage on the module - The included filemover indicates 126kb. Suprisingly this additional storage does not appear to decrease with the # of messages. I'll keep loading it up to make sure.
3. I continually get *Unable to talk to my-Vox HS1, please try again ERRORS. This is highly aggrevating and if it continues, the unit WILL go back.
4. I got the ICE unit because I have no idea what my VISOR will look like from year to year. It looks ok in my Platinum, but looks better in the BVDX. Construction looks strong and fit to the SB slot is snug.
5. Unit can play alarms for the different recordings. It has a bunch of different alarms...maybe too many, but it's possible it automatically picked up all the midis I've collected. In either case, I can see no use for this feature. Granted it could fill in for a regular alarm clock, but at the rate I'm watching the batteries drain, I'd be hesitant to leave the MY-Vox in the unit.
6. Unit has a flush button for starting/stopping voice recording which is highly useful while driving. This eleminates the need to work with the interface and be distracted from the road.
7. Volume is good and tone quality is fairly clear. It does easily pick up noise in the background. After all, it is a recorder.
8. Unit comes with earphones...WHY? I can see a few applications, but I'd rather pay less...
Which brings us to the real rub...
9. This unit is $69. It is a very thoughtful gift and will prove to have business applications, but the pricepoint is (IMHO) about $30 above it's worth. Scratch the myriad of alarms(neat toys?) and the earplug and lower the price. The Backup module is $39 and invaluable, the Flash unit is $89 and doubles capacity...this unit is a diversion that might prove to be useful when we are too distracted to write to our PDA's, but it is in no way necessary and this price is way out of line for a diversion.
Just my opinion....
****BTW - I just returned my Platinum to the Rhodiana case and it is easy to hear the recording through the case, it is however difficult to depress the SB button through the thick plastic that holds the unit in place...this could be easily modified. In my Vaja case, it is also easy to hear and is much easier to depress the button. No modification would be required.
