Opinions on DC to AC converters?

I was on another website where someone suggested I purchase a DC to AC converter for my car so that I could run (or charge) all of my gadgets without buying individual car adapters for each device.
I am sure there is no problem using the DC-AC converter to charge my cell phone, digital camera, Motorola portable radios, and Clie but would you use it to operate or charge up a laptop computer?
The converter has two outlets and is rated to 300 watts and I am sure my laptop does not draw that much power but how bad will that affect my battery and does anybody have any good reasons to warn me off this idea?
