Question

I'm trying to use Mocha W32 to establish a PPP connection to my computer with the serial cradle. I've also tried LinkDirect. Each time I hit connect, I get the following message: "Error: serial port in use (0x0307)". This happens even if the Visor is out of the cradle and not connected to anything! I'm very confused. Can anyone tell me what's going on??

Are you by any chance using a Stowaway or GoType! keyboard with the driver enabled? The keyboard driver "locks" the serial port if I'm not mistaken...

No, I'm not...I also tried resetting. Once in a while I can get the Visor to freeze before it says that the port is in use ;-). Still can't get it to work though.

Not sure if this is related, but here goes...

I have used my Visor with a modem attached to the serial cradle before. For the longest time I was getting "Serial port in use" errors. My solution was to make sure the Visor is OFF when you place it in the cradle, then turn it on. My modem worked every time after that.

Hope this helps.

When I was connecting my GPS unit I ran into the same issue. I think it is some program that is not letting go of the serial port properly. I was trying two different programs for my GPS (both using the serial port) when I shut down one and went on to the other, the first one didnt let go of the serial port and gave me that error serial port in use. I did a quick software reset, which might have been a drastic measure, then it worked great. I would agree with MarkEagle. I think you should look at some other program that you are using ,doesn't mean you are using the serial port with that program, just that the program locks the serial port for other reasons while your using it.

Well, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that when I don't turn it on until it's in the cradle, it doesn't say the serial port is in use. The bad news is that now it freezes every time. :-( When I push connect a popup appears that is titled "Service Connection Progress", but there's nothing in the window except a cancel button. That's when my Visor freezes, and I have to do a soft reset to unlock it. :-( Any other suggestions? ;-) Has anyone actually succeeded in getting a PPP connection through a serial cradle?

Another thing comes to mind... the Visor, due to it's USB ability, actually routes "serial" requests to the Springboard... not the docking connector (confirmed to me by HS Dev Support). The serial portion of the Handspring is vastly different from that of the Palm (both in hardware and software)... and since most serial software uses the standard Serial Manager API calls, this kind of thing happens... very frustrating.

So I guess that means this probably won't work. Is there anyone that actually has made it work with a serial cradle? On another note, I said earlier that my Visor seemed frozen with the popup "Service Connection Progress." Now I have come to find out that if I let it sit for long enough, it unfreezes and displays the message "PPP Timeout." Does this mean that the desktop software is at fault, and if so that it would indeed be possible to make a PPP connection via the serial port if the software worked correctly? Anyone know of software that does work? (I'm using MochaPPP). Thanks for any input!
