I bought a Thinmodem, thinking I could hook it up to my (audiovox CDM9000) cellphone. Was I naive? There is a data cable for the phone, but it ends in a 9-pin serial connection.

I'd like to get my cellphone and my Visor to talk to each other. FYI, not interested in the yadayada or Omnisky solutions. I already pay one monthly fee, thanks.

Anyone get this combination to work? Any other wireless solutions that I can try? TIA

If the phone ends in a serial connector, i'd suggest getting a markspace serial modem cable for the visor, this has a hotsync connector on one end and a serial on the other. This is how it should work, but I know some phones still will not work with this setup (apparently some phones do not want to talk to the visor, even when connected properly)

Older GSM phones are definitely a gray area. After talking to Mitsubishi and Xircom, I have some doubts that my G150 will work as a wireless solution. The phone is 5 years old and there is just no support for it.

I figured that if I could find a way to connect the phone to the SpringPort with whatever cable would work, then all would be good. Not so. Although Xircom could just be telling me that to avoid a possible product return. Apparently the software drivers will not support the phone.

I still don't understand why there should be an issue with the type of phone I have. If all GSM phones access the network using the same protocol then why should the modem have a problem?

Oh well.

Well, here's what I found out. Basically, I shoulda RTFM!

My cell phone acts as a modem, and Thinmodem does not support cell phones. OK, I assumed too much when I bought it, and didn't read the spec until after it arrived. I still like the Thinmodem, so I'll keep it.

I'm still looking for a way to get my Visor and cell phone to talk. Haven't given up yet. Anybody out there solve this yet?

PS - cell phone is CDMA data ready and acts as a modem.

ThinModem and Cell Phone

I use a ThinModem when I am at a desk or airport that allows the male connector. I also purchased a cable from NYSEBULL from this forum to connect my StarTac 7868 (CDMA) cell phone to the Visor. With the cable (~$30), I dial up my ISP (long distance is free on my plan) when I am away from a phone line, and download my emails. If I am near a phone line, I use the ThinModem. Two notes: 1)the cable connects through the HotSync port, so you cannot use it with a StowAway keyboard; 2)you must remove the ThinModem from the Springboard or the connection to the cell phone is bypassed (intuitively obvious for everyone but me). It's alot of cables and small pieces, but you can buy a raincoat and fedora and dress like Inspector Gadget.

One cool thing I was able to do. When I am away from the office, I use the Eudora Internet Suite http://www.eudora.com/internetsuite/download/ to read the emails. It's free, but does not support attachments. To get around this problem, I have the office send attachments to my free account at ThinMail.com http://www.thinmail.com/ . ThinMail sends me an email with a link to the attachments stored on their website. By tapping the link in Eudora Mail, Eudora Web jumps in and takes me to the site for a preview. If I want to see the entire attachment in text form, I return to Eudora Mail and forward the original email to [email protected] which converts it to text and returns a second email. The next time I check my mail, I have the entire document in text format. A little bit of work, but. . .

2. The software is free for now
3. The fedora covers my balding melon.
