Question

I'm looking to replace my VDX, and the battle was between the Platinum and the Prism, but the Edge really looks great, so I was wondering how good is the Prism, really.

I mean, I know that 16 bit color is a vast improvement over my 4 gray scale Visor DLX, but man, it's a lot of money.

Should I stay in the world of black and white, or go full color?

wait

you know, saw that pictures of edge and I was just looking at it for looong time. it just so cool and pretty and thin and ..... but I don't think I'm gonna get it 'cos
1. gray is gray. I wanna have edge with TFT color screen.
2. expensive just like you are saying.
3. and we know something called "snap" and "twist"
is coming,

so maybe we should wait, see the new ones, and compare that and other products which by that time much cheaper.

but I don't think I'm gonna buy anything for a while, since I just got my VDX over Christmas and I don't have any complain, any problem or any regret. it will stay by my side 'till it breaks or if I get really tired of it.

Wink

I find myself drooling over the Edge's form factor and design - unlike some folks on the board, I think it looks cool.

That said, I'm pretty devoted to my Prism. Once you get used to color, it's tough to go back. I still have my VDx, and I get it out occasionally, and can't believe I ever liked the greyscale screen. I might feel differently if I used my Prism in direct sunlight more often (it's very tough to read outside in broad daylight), but I live in Seattle so that's not a serious problem.

Wink I'll wait for the twist

The Edge looks great. But I actually use the color for in combination with datebook 4 for all my meetings.

The applications for color are becoming more prolific and it's just plain cool!

I love the size of the Edge though. Planned Obsolescence .. don't you love the computer industry!?

I would choose the Edge over the Platinum, but not the Prism. For me, the color was really worth it, and the visibility problems in bright daylight aren't an issue-- I usually don't work on my Visor while I'm outside (especially not this time of year, in Maine!)

Before spending the extra bucks for color, though, make sure you really need it. Yes, black text on a white background is easier to read than monochrome LCD, but that's not a good enough reason alone to make the expense. Most of the core apps don't make enough use of the color functions yet. There are some good add-on apps that DO make good use of the color abilities, though.

After having a color handheld I honestly don't think that I could go back to non-color.

But also, I always have some kind of module plugged in - whether a memory card or thinmodem or eyemodule from time to time. If you look at the picures in the review posted today -- with the add-on that allows the use of the springboard modules - you've lost the thin design and now have a pda that won't fit traditional cases.

I know that new modules will be designed and released to fit the Edge, but I simply don't have the desire to spend $450 to replace the ones I've already purchased.

I'll stick with what I've got now - when something with improved color, sleekness and MORE MEMORY comes out I'll consider it.

Wink

it's a trade-off and personal taste issue. Honestly, visor edge is cool. It's far more better than palm vx. But I will keep my prism until visor edge color is available.

I wish my Prism was pretty on the outside, but the color screen isn't worth giving up. Recently I tried using my boyfriend's VDx (I sold him my old one!) and found it very hard to look at.

Since getting color, I use my PDA _even more_ than before -- how is that possible? I don't know. It's in my hand constantly, especially since getting the wireless modem.

Personally, I'm glad the Edge isn't in color. I'd be ticked if my 5-month old $450 investment was obsolete already. And I think it's too soon to talk the old ball-and-chain into buying a used Prism!

Talking I want an Edge

Hey all,
I've got a Prism now, and honestly I love the color, but I just dont really see a need for it. I really like the form factor and durability of the edge, its really sleek - and I want something small I can slip in my pocket and thats relativly unobtrusive. So I have a proposition for anyone...

I'm willing to trade
-1 Prism (all accessories included -- used for 1 month)
-1 Brown Nubuck Prism case
-1 Ice 64mb Minijam (never used)

ALL FOR an EDGE!! E-mail me ([email protected]) and we can talk if you're interested.

Thanks
Mike

I have a VDX and I switch between them about 50/50. I use the prism until I'm irritated because I can't use it outside, then I switch to my deluxe until the color/features draw me back to the prism. I would have no problem sticking with the edge for a while, but then again I wouldn't mind having a thin color device that I could use outside either. Either way I'm going to choose one and stick with it for a while.

I've been spoiled, and now that I've seen color, I can't go back to gray.

Now if Handspring came out with a color edge, then I would be there in a heart beat, no matter what the cost (alright, maybe up to about 650).

$650!?!?!?!?

$650!? what are you, Dr. or something??? I mean, isn't that too high even you really want it? and I think we should just pretend that we don't have any money at all and demand for $100 color device. if you say you could pay $650, they might make us pay that much!

I think any device like PDA shouldn't cost that much. after all, it just a tool, you know?

hope there will be cost reduction for TFT and all that,
'cos now they have 160x120 TFT screen on cellphones in
Japan, and getting sooo popular. we might get some tech. spin off from that.

Calm down. I was just expressing my desire for a color device in the form factor of the Edge, and I had no intention of giving it a price.

Yes, I'm sure that Handspring uses Ben to decide how to price their units. Dammit, Ben, you should have told 'em you could only afford $9.95 for a Visor Edge and we'd all be able to afford the new models!!!!

I saw something like that and Wal-Mart. It was about 3 inches x 2 inches x .25 inches. It could add, subtract, multiply, divide, and it had a built in "memory" function. Pretty cool!

ARE YOU NUTS? Sell all of those on Ebay individually and you can buy two Visor Edges!!

I have a Prism now, and would not trade it for any non-color PDA.

My next PDA must have:

* 16-bit color
* At least 16 MB RAM
* Thin like the Edge
