Question

Anyone heard anything more about a release date on the Flip-Lid? The Tactilis website hasn't been updated since mid-March, and I haven't seen anything on the discussion boards for a while.

I spoke to them about a month ago and they said that they were updating their website (which hasn't been updated since March 18th. They also said that they were working on the lids which would be available in 6 weeks so I guess we have another 2 weeks to go. Tactilis needed to make sure the manufacturer was the best available. There hasn't been any e-mail response from them yet nor any response in the message boards for a while. If they were smart they'd make some sort of statement...

I called them around the first of March to ask about the Flip-Lid. They said they would be taking pre-orders by the end of March, which never happened. They did state that they were going forward with the Lid and the website would be updated. You would think they would post something on the website to let people know they are still in existence. I finally gave up and bought an EB Slipper Prism, which I love.

I gave up on them and order a Flip-Cover this week. I waited patiently for Tactilis, but they are too erratic in their response, and I'm not confident anymore in their promises.

I ordered a FlipCover also. I like the design much better
than the Tactillis cover. I goes into a slip case much
easier and is much more secure. It flips all the way to the
back so it's out of the way. I'm going to try to figure out
a way to connect one to my Minstrel S modem.

I e-mailed Tactilis today, but I haven't heard back from them yet.

The Palm III lid that came with the Flip-Clip has not held up well. The edge where it connects to the clip cracked after 1 month. I glued it back together. But now, after one more month, it's not staying connected to the Flip-Clip at all. It just falls right off and I can't even see another crack. Has anybody else had this problem?

I'm hoping their Flip-Lid will be better, and I'm willing to give it a try if they ever release them.

But right now I'm back to using the old Handspring snap on cover. I'm considering the other alternative, the FlipCover, but I don't like the way it takes up the springboard slot.

I really liked the Flip-Clip while it worked.

Ditto. And you can use the adaptors if you keep a flush module in there like the 8Mb flash. It fits very well and protects the screen very well. Plus the ice cover lets you see what's going on underneath, if you need to.

Very true. That has actually been my only disappointment, because the adapter cover I stuck on my backup module doesn't seem to stay on all that well.

Before attaching the adapter, make sure to clean it with
alcohol and let it dry good. I have had no problem with
mine.

Adapter

"because the adapter cover I stuck on my backup module doesn't seem to stay on all that well."

Basically, some people have had some problems with adhesion because the top of their module is wavey and the current tape couldn't get a good bond. We have a new tape that we've been using for the past three weeks that works alot better. It has a .025" thick foam layer on the bottom so it can conform to the top of your module better.

If you send us your adapter I'll have it replaced with the new stuff for free. With the new stuff you shouldn't have any problems. Send the adapter to us and we'll take off the old tape and replace it with the new stuff.

Why not save your customers shipping costs and just ship
them the new tape? Should be easy enough to replace.

That would certainly be appreciated. If not, please pm me or e-mail me and tell me the procedure to send this to you.

Tactilis finally has a new message on their site. Hopefully this means the flip-lid will be ready for consumers soon!

Get it yourself

Why not just go to Staples or somewhere and get your own replacement tape? Much less trouble than sending in your cover...Also less expensive than the shipping costs for FlipCover to sent you a replacement piece. Maybe I'm just too impatient to wait on someone else to take care of my problems.

I got my new Tactilis FlipLid today, and just replaced my FlipCover with it.

My impressions so far are:

Color: I have an Ice VDX, and have been using green accessories because they go so well together (they harmonize with the green circuit board visible through the case). The FlipCover's green is a close match to the circuit boards, and a bit bluer than the green stylus. The Tactilis is yellower- almost a bright lime color. Still a decent match, but brighter than I would have expected.

Lid fit: The FlipCover fits low and snug, similar to the original snap cover. The Tactilis 'floats' about 3/16" above the screen, but flexes easily downwards, which may provide some shock absorbtion. It is a bit wider than the VDX to allow for the side-mounted hinges and adds about 3/16 to both sides. The lower edge fits closely with a 'hill' for a thumb or finger catch 9although i find that I open it by catching a side and flipping it like a Star Trek (Original Series) communicator. Both lids seem to prevent accidental button pushes.

Hinges: The Tactilis side-mounting hinges allow the use of most modules, but only allows the lid to open 1/2 of the way, while the FlipCover goes all the way back. Honestly- big deal. All the way back makes it hard to lay it on a table to use, while the Tactilis can be used as a sunscreen to an extent. On the other hand, the FlipCover's hinges do not add hardly anything to the overall size of the unit. Both hinges seem about equally durable (or flimsy).

Interesting features: I like the way the Tactilis holds in either a 1/4 or a 1/2 open state. The 1/4 open state is pretty handy. I like the little compartment the FlipCover uses to snap into the Visor- if I could just figure out what to store in there! I also like the cool one-finger flip-open ability fo the Tactilis, and the wrist-flip closing of the FlipCover. The FlipCover works great if you are using a pouch or holster since it is so smooth and close-fitting, but the Tactilis lets you use the Visor in cases that use the original snap-cover as a holder. An odd point would be that you could scribe a vertical line in the middle of the Tactilis to help you use compasses or GPS software better (the line would help act as a sighting guide).

Overall: I think both are decent, and nicely priced. I would use the Tactilis if I am routinely using a module that the FlipCover's glue-on hinge cannot work on (SoundsGood, CF or SM card modules, etc.), or if I were using a case that the Visor snapped into.

I would use the FlipCover for holsters, people not routinely using modules or using 'flat-top' modules, etc.

Odd stuff file: You can use both at the same time! Reverse the lid on the FlipCover so it goes on the back (it will not latch) and you got both sides covered! (I have NO idea WHY you would do something this dumb, but then again, I did it!)

I thought that Tactilis was out of business? Where did you buy your FlipLid?

Nope, they're still there...it just looks like they're not doing a whole heck of a lot.
