BTW...this is my first inane ramble...

Well, looks like I am going to my Senior Prom after all...
I originally was not going to go, as I have heard our school's prom isn't that great, and just go to the after prom party...not worth spending the money on the tux, the dinner, etc.

Boy, how having a date changes you! I am going to go with a good friend of mine that I have known forever whose date cancelled on her today, the day before the prom (creep...though I don't even know him...). I found this out basically at lunch today, and I have already rushed to the store to pick up a tux (luckily, they still had a nice one, and got a good deal for about $55), and I am going to the florist in the morning and see if I can pick up a last minute corsage. I am also trying to figure out where to take her to dinner as all the nice places have been reservations-only for a few weeks...she wants McDonalds or Taco Bell, but I am thinking I can do a little better than that...

So tomorrow, I won't be on the boards much. I will be rushing around town trying to make everything nice for my new date...

amazing how things can change in a matter of hours, isn't it?

I skipped junior prom, got arrested and went to jail the week before senior prom, so i didn't go to that either.

proms

My junior prom date was a girl from India whose parents were so strict that we had to have the limo take her home at 10pm which meant leaving around dessert time. I spent the rest of the post-prom activities all by my lonesome self.

My senior prom date was a wonderful albino girl. She was great at the prom, but the post-prom activities in NJ consist of going to seaside heights (boardwalk town) and we couldn't go outside for more than a minute at a time because her ultra-pale skin would start getting sunburn so we just hung out under the awnings and in the arcades.

Yes. I wasn't the most popular guy in school and back then, could be identified as a geek/nerd.

anyone who looks back on their high school days with that wistful look in their eyes and says "the good ol' days" should have their head pounded violently with a cast-iron skillet. College was much more fun than High School.

I got arrested for drinking under the age. I was spending the weekend fishing with my boss at the restaurant I was working at. We got hungry about 2AM and went to the restaurant...man, my dad was pissed.

I forgot you could be arrested for that in the US...
But it was ok to drive a car and carry a gun right?

I'm assuming you mean sober. Sure it is. Guns are completely harmless, it's those stinking bullets and people that cause the problem.

I've had a dire need of SEVERAL mental breaks at work and took the time to read the entire thread from the beginning (yes, joshua, I'm a rebel!).

I have to say, you guys are among the most, if not THE MOST, intelligent people on the internet today. I am flabbergasted that I even found this place. (OK having a Visor Pro helps).

I really related to the religion questions back toward the beginning of the thread because its an issue between my wife and I (I'm agnostic, she's born again and we're trying to figure out what to do with our 7 month old kid).

But I'll tell you this: don't read this thread from the beginning. It's like coedine.. you get slowly hooked and you don't know how to stop reading.

Let 'em think for his/herself.

Granted the religion section was quite some time ago, and I or someone else may have said this (I don't have time to go back and see) but I really feel that exposing children to your religion before they're able to make their own decisions about that sort of thing is a form of brainwashing. I have this same problem with the public school system, however.

yeah

dang. those turkey sandwiches are flammable. must be all the additives they put in lunch meats these days.

This is what my wife and I agreed on:

The kid can go with his mom to church and their sunday school sessions when he's older (say 7 years old when he's at an age that we can reasonably discuss what mom and dad believe). My wife and I strongly believe that he needs to reach his conclusions on his own through either rational thought or via his faith.

We will tell him he is free to believe what he wants to believe. If he says he doesn't believe that, say, that Jesus walked on water or changed water to wine and gives a good rational argument (for his age), then my wife will have to respect his beliefs.

Conversely, if he says he believes Jesus is the son of god and the only way to get to heaven is through him (or whatever it is John 3:16 says) and shows to me that he isn't just repeating what the teacher said, then I have to respect that belief as well.

In sunday school or in regular school, he is free to question or disagree with the teacher on what she says (politely of course) and even discuss the subject matter in depth with the teacher (after class or during break). He is even free to explore other religions and check out their services and see what he believes in.

In all, We want to teach him to think for himself and not to be the type of mindless drone that we see in some schools these days being taught how to pass the standards tests and not how to think for themselves.
