Cool

I love mine too. Really needs a tight form-fitting case though...(I've grown to HATE the screen cover---A pain in the ***)

I really really like my Blue Visor! I even like the color. With all of the Hupla about these units I was expecting a let down once I actually had the unit. This is my first PDA so I am discovering new ways to use the Visor hour by hour. I recieved my unit yesterday so the newness has not worn off yet.

I am really pumped. I even like the cover.
HandSpring delivered the unit one day ahead of schedule. This exceeded my expections by a couple of weeks!

I know that HS has a ways to go before they have cleaned up this present situation. I feel bad for those who continue to struggle. I hope and believe they will make good on thier promises. I think they should give a stylus pack to every customer that has had to wait longer than 6 weeks. A small gesture to early adopters on the bleeding edge.

The stylus pack might be a worthwhile idea, but you should keep in mind that the fun is just beginning :-)

What happens when people start calling tech support and get the shaft? What about people waiting two weeks for replacement units that never come?

Seems to me that they're going to be giving a lot of free stylli away :-)

It seems to me that the Visor line is an excellent stop-gap for a color Palm unit. I dunno if Handspring will be around in year

I've got a blue VDx, along with a Plat, an Edge, and a Prism. They are all really solid. Unlike a lot of people here, I've never had to send any of them back to HandSpring. The first Edge that I got had a dead backlight out of the box. I took it back to the store and swapped it out. The replacement has been solid every since.

good heavens, the first thread! (I mean deitrichbohn's link, not this thread.)

Even without looking at the dates I could tell this was an old thread -- I've only had my Visor for six months (give or take) and I've not heard (and when I say "heard" I mean "read at VisorCentral's discussion board") that many complaints.
I'm very happy with it. I've only had a couple problems, which weren't related to the general operation of the Visor, and have found it to be geneally reliable.

Now if I'd only remembered to turn it on this past Saturday, my PortaKitty wouldn't have died.

Love mine - I've had it for 18 months now and would replace it with a VDX tomorrow if something happened to it.

I've "sold" probably 6-8 to friends as well, everyone at work knows me as the Handspring champion - and I wouldn't be such an ardent supporter if Handspring didn't make quality products.

My only dissappointment is that after 18 months I have yet to see a module that makes economic sense to buy - but that still wouldn't make me ever go back to WinCE (my previous device) or try out a Palm device...

Unhappy

I finally gave up on Handspring and moved to the Compaq iPAQ camp this Spring. Have no doubt, I was one of the most rabid Handspring supporters around- I can personally attest to convincing over 20 friends/co-workers to move to Handsprings. I made a few postings to this board over the last year-and-a-half and lurked since late summer of 1999.
With my hectic corporate daily schedule I need a reliable PDA that can keep up with all my appointments, emails and contacts. My first Vdx (purchased in late 1999) would require a reset once-a-day (no extra apps loaded- please, no flames about hackmaster extensions)and a total reset once every two weeks (my backup module got a lot of exercise!). After a few months of calls to customer support Handspring was nice enough to send me a replacement unit which began exhibiting the same behavior shortly after shipping. The constant loss of data (usually during a 2-hour long meeting with the senior staff) wore on me. Please note my experience was not unusual- 14 out of my "converts" reported similar issues and finally gave up too (many to Palm devices (esp. Vx) and a few others to PocketPCs).
I saw an iPAQ this Spring and decided to join the dark side. I now have a stable platform (never had to reset the device) able to keep up with all my data. I can play mp3s during long meetings and can watch movies while I fly. I have seamless wireless connectivity to our corporate LAN and the Internet. I am now at the point of never travelling with my laptop- I have all I need with my iPAQ in a smaller, more portable platform.
I'm sure someone will harp about the expandability of the Handspring line to play mp3s, connect wirelessly, battery life, etc. I'll just smile knowingly and patiently wait until you too become a convert.

That's really too bad. Out of curiosity, why are you still here, then?

[...] My first Vdx (purchased in late 1999) would require a reset once-a-day (no extra apps loaded- please, no flames about hackmaster extensions)and a total reset once every two weeks (my backup module got a lot of exercise!).

If you didn't have any hacks loaded, it sounds like you were bitten by the DRAM bug. A bit unfair to consider that Handspring's fault, though, since it was actually a Micron problem which affected Palms and TRGs as well. To have it hit that often, though, you must have had your Visor pretty full, eh?

After a few months of calls to customer support Handspring was nice enough to send me a replacement unit which began exhibiting the same behavior shortly after shipping.

Well, if you restored the exact same setup, that's not surprising since they didn't appear to know what was going on with Micron's DRAM controller at first.

[...] Please note my experience was not unusual- 14 out of my "converts" reported similar issues and finally gave up too (many to Palm devices (esp. Vx) and a few others to PocketPCs).

It was quite a common occurrence in the late spring/early summer 2000 on all Palms with 8MB of RAM.

I'm sure someone will harp about the expandability of the Handspring line to play mp3s, connect wirelessly, battery life, etc. I'll just smile knowingly and patiently wait until you too become a convert.

While that possibility might help you sleep better at night, you'll likely be waiting a very long time for me.

You know, the funny thing is, I tried out an iPAQ that Compaq lent my company to evaluate, and I didn't like it for the same reasons (plus a few others) you complain about with the Visor. My Visor has been solid so far (knocks on wood) and has only given me problems when I have been "experimenting" with beta software. The iPAQ on the other hand, I managed to crash that the first 10 min I had it, with no other apps loaded, just exploring the built in apps. And I continued to have problems with it, resetting in multiple times. It had a great screen, and the multimedia was nice, but it took to long to get simple task completed (too many taps, etc.) I also didn't really find anything that it could do, that my VDX couldn't. And in many cases, my VDX did it better. The fact that Compaq also has been having problems with releasing flash updates that don't crash or wipe the handheld hasn't been confidence inspiring either. I guess it goes to show that nothing is perfect and anyone can have a bad experience.

Lightbulb

Are you kidding?

I think that I speak for all when I say we are all very pleased Visor owners and users. The point of these forums is to share Visor-related interests and insights, providing a platform to ask fellow Visor owners for ideas and solutions when difficulties are encountered. This means that there will numerous chats where we express out dissatisfaction with the operation of apps on the visor, or even with the visor itself, but really in doing so, we are able to give developers critcial feedback, while we gain/share solutions and remedies.

The fact that Visor owners are so plentiful, thus the reason for not just this, but many other Visor discussion boards, speaks volumes as to overall product satisfaction. Trust me, if the visor was a problematic piece of crap, these message boards would be empty or not exists, since all Visor owners would be too busy trying to sell units on ebay ( ha..ha..ha..). Seriously, overall we are very pleased with our Visors.

Personally, I am never without my Visor DLX. Same for my fiance (Got one for her as well, after falling in love with mine).
