If you happened to be following the weather these past few days, you may have noticed a huge amount of rain falling on the Houston area. Yes, Tropical Storm Allison doesn't seem to want to leave and has kept Houston at a stand-still since last night.

My wife and I live on the 2nd floor, so all of our belongings are ok, but our cars took some water damage last night. Hopefully we can get the carpets clean.

Anyway, since I'm stuck inside for the next few days, I thought I'd post something. I hope all of our Houston readers are able to keep their families and belongings dry.

Yeah, DSL and power never went out. I heard ~30,000 lost power around here thought.

When people used to ask me I had a 4x4 witha lift when Houston was completely flat I would just say "12 feet over sea level". Montrose, where I lived, used to flood all the time- I imagine it must be deep now! Thanks for posting, I'm calling my mom as soon as I get home to see how she's doing.

Ha! Ha! I'm funny. (points to title) Maybe this rain is an OMEN to keep my account safe!


Nah, today was the first day in 2 weeks it has been sunny for over an hour. I don't know if it's in relationship to the tropical storms, but there was $2000.00 worth of water damage done to my house. So far, they've had to replace the ENTIRE electrical breaker box (it was flooded completely! ) , and the rugs that were on the marble floor. (It just missed my dust-collecting wintel laptop... damn!)

Thank gawd the insurance covered it. They don't cover water that goes in through the basement. It was traced to a drain build up because of the heavy rains.

It's kinda ironic.. here in Minnesota, like 1000 miles north of you, we are having the best weather we've had for like 2 weeks! (and I'm taking advantage of it.. so far I have made $30 on mowing lawns!!!)

Yeah I saw reports of flooding in the Montrose area. I heard there were over 500 rescues last night. Now go call your mom.

Man, Houston sucks right now, I live in bellaire, just inside the loop, water seeped into our house and ive spent the last 7 hours ripping out carpet with my grandmother, a girl i know's grandparents had to ditch their SUV in floodwater, pretty hectic.

Stupid rain

I will be glad when Allison goes away. My fiance is stuck in Dallas, so I cannot see her until the rain and flooding lets up enough for her to get a flight back.

I'm glad everyone can swim in my family, or I'd be worried. I can't get through to anyone I know on the phone. All I get is a recording that says due to the flood the area I'm trying to call is unavailable.
If you're in that area we're saying prayers for all of you. If you're not in the area, please say prayers for my mom, and everyone else, stuck in the flood.

I am full of weather stories. Here are two.

Story #1:
I was biking home with a friend when it started to pour outside. Eventually we stopped our bikes when there was lightning all around us. We dropped our bikes and ran next to a random house, figuring we would be safer. About five minutes later, lightning struck across the street. BOOM! Second loudest thing I ever heard (first loudest coming up in next story). Eventually, the rain let up and we biked home.

Story #2:
This happened a few weeks ago. I sleeping, as most people do at 6:44 am on a weekend, when lightning struck a tree right outside my window. POW! It sounded like an atomic bomb exploded. Half of the tree exploded. All the windows on one side of the house were shattered. Pieces of wood flew in. We had a guest, and a piece of wood flew in through the window and hit him in the head. Everyone one was OK. Outside, there were pieces of wood down the block. There was glass all over the place. Three weeks later, the windows still have plastic covering them up, there is still glass all over the place, and there are still slates falling from the roof. And I'm hosting a class party on thursday! Maybe I'll make them sign a release .

I could post pictures, but VC won't let me upload zip files! Oh well.

If I submit one pic, which would you rather, the tree or the damage (windows, etc.)?

Tropical Storm Jerry dumped 15 inches on us in 1995, so I know what it's like. It took two years to repair all of the bridges that were wiped out.

So far some areas have had 35 inches.

A creek down the road has banks at 12 feet, it got up to 21 feet last night. Luckily the record hasn't been broken. Claudette in 1979 rained 43 inches in 24 hours in Alvin, TX. I think that's the nation wide record from what they said on the news.
