Think about it, the new M100: PocketMirror, Hardware add-on components advertised on their page, faceplate covers, USB compatibility (see http://palm.com/products/accessories/usb.html)

Kill? Hardly...Just offer up competition, infact I think the thing's rather ugly and unprofessional design will help the Visor.

Thumbs down

That URL isn't working. Perhaps Palm's Secret Masters are trying to conceal their nefarious plans?

Maybe the following link is what you are referring to? http://palm.3com.com/products/palmm100/

A Handspring killer? I think not! The smaller screen is a strike against this device. Also, you have to pay extra for USB; and, even when using USB, I'm fairly sure that it only runs at serial port speeds . . . the connector is still just a serial port after all. Other than color face plates and the Palm OS v3.5, there is little to nothing to recommend this device over the Visor. I'll take the larger screen, Springboard slot and true USB any day of the week.

well i dont think the new palm is a handspring killer. i had a palmVx, before i bought my vdx. altough the palm had a sharper image screen wise, the sycing speed was horrible. i even bought palm's usb connectivity kit, hoping that would speed up synching.. well it finally got up to 19,000 bits per second....then if i had to reboot my computer, i would have to go into safe mode, then delete the usb software, and reload it. a real pain!. after purchasing my vdx, i loaded the software.. and Wow! even after running the same applications that i had on my palm Vx, i would say my vdx synchs about 4 times faaster. so as far as im concerned visor has palm beat. (palm technical support was horrible. only one person i conntacted tried to help) so, again apretty face does not make a reliable pda.. thank you visor!

I heard the USB kit is free for those who need it (Mainly new Mac users), you just have to send away for it.

It may use a USB port, but the plain fact is: Palms are designed around Serial output design, so they can only transfer at Serial rates.

Talking

I have read a lot of comments by so called 3com lovers re: how ugly the visor was, i bought one anyway. A few months later, the so called "ugly" PDA was topping the retails charts.... maybe, just maybe, the 3com guys realized something..... "if we create an uglier PDA, we could get that chunk of retail back"... tadaaa... M100! much smaller screen, USB(?) capable, face plate changeable, a whopping 2MB memory... Flash ROM though(manufacturers expect that the shortage of these will be over by mid 2002).... enough sarcasm.... I don't think the M100 can replace the visor....period!

Palm needs Handspring to succeed. They wouldn't ever try to put Hansdpring put of business...they make money off of each device that ships with the Palm OS.

I'd call them "friendly" competitors.

EXACTLY!
I don't understand why some Visor users and some Palm users feel like they have to bash eachother 'till the cows come home. I think these two companies symbolize a common philosophy on PDA's and that they should be celebrated together. I guess some people strive on trying to prove why they're better than everything else?

Good point, you dont see HP, Casio, and Compaq trying to murder each other in the Pocket PC market, same applies here.

I think the new term for this dependent / competing relationship is called "co-opetition".

Wink

And we all know how well things have gone for IBM and Novell in their co-opetive relationship with Micro$oft!! Hopefully there will be a more equitable relationship between Palm and Handspring.

The M100 does have one feature I really like: A Lexan digitizer! If an aftermarket company was to offer one for the Visor, I would buy it and put it in myself. The only thing that killed my original Pilot 1000 was a broken screen.
