My MemPlug SM vs. FlashPlus Adventure

OK, I got a MemPlug SM to run head to head against my FlashPlus CF unit. I had planned on waiting until my Mr. Flash 64 Mb SM card arrived to do a complete 'oranges to oranges' comparison, but I decided to post a couple things now.

1. The MemPlug SM I got from our local CampUSA has a nearly flush SM card slot, yet the entire module protrudes out the back and top about the thickness of an SM card. Therefore- I cannot use any case that uses the snap-on cover type mount. Strike one.

2. So far, I cannot seem to use my PQI brand SM/CF card reader on the SM card, although it works perfectly on my CF card. I tried upgrading the PI software, doing a full format on the SM card, etc., but it ain't happening. Steeee-rike two! (If I cannot use the reader, then handling large files or groups of files will not be as easy or fun.)

3. Well, this is a real irritant... I cannot seem to get ANYTHING to copy over to the SM card using PIMover. The card works in my camera and has been reformetted with no error messages, I am using the latest updates... Strike three.

Now I am ticked. PIBackUp doesn't want to work, I cannot move things to the SM card either directly or with a reader, CSpotRun is not pre-loaded...

OK- it could be a bad module, but this is the only SM card module my local store had. If I take it back, I'll have to wait for a replacement- and right now, I am not sure it would be worth it (granted, I am pretty ticked off right now, and that is probably distorting my judgement a bit!)

It could be a bad card. it is a SanDisk 8 MB card that works just fine in my camera, though (and is one of the reasons I wanted a SM MemPlug- sharing media!)

So, what do others think?

My experience

My Memplug SM seems to work okay -- although I did get a fatal exception when I pulled it out (the next time was fine.)

The SM card does stick out the top and the module is not flush against the back, unlike the FlashPlus. The software (PiMover) is a little slicker looking that FAFileMover, but FAFileMover is much more functional -- it makes better use of the limited screen space. On that the CF wins hands down.

The MemPlug is definitely slower, probably due to the speed differences between SM and CF. I know, however, that speed has been one of Dave Kessler's primary concerns all along, though.

All-in-all, I like the FlashPlus better. I am planning to pick up a MemPlug CF while they're on sale at ChumpUSA this week ($50 - $20 rebate = $30) just as I did the SM module.

I haven't tried the MemPlug VFS software, but I can say that the Kopsis VFS software (for the FlashPlus and Matchbook Drive) is amazingly stable and functional for beta software, and boy do I love it! (I've got three MBD's going -- One with Mapopolis and maps, another with SplashPhoto and pictures, and one with bdicty and some dictionaries. 7.5MB free on the VDX I'm using for beta testing.)
