I have a Nokia 8290 (GSM 1900) and was wondering if I could use the IR on the phone with the IR on the Visor to grab my email or update my AvantGo or do I need to buy the a modem with a cell connection? Thanks in advance.

Should work

With a Platinum, you have OS 3.5, so it should work as is (you need OS 3.3 or higher for the IR to function with a phone). For a Deluxe or basic Visor, you could download software like IrLink to get that capability.

I was using a Nokia 8290 and Prism to surf the web with Voicestream's service. It should work. Make sure you order data service with your service provider and also make sure you set-up your Network connection to (IR to a PC/Handheld).

No need for a data service package. Just set up the Visor to dial your existing ISP, and you'll be fine. It will use up voice minutes, but I've already got too many already...
