Cool

I hope a two-way pager card will be made as a Springboard. This could effectively be used as a kind of 'Instant Messenging' app for Visors. Users could send pages to one another that contain text messages. Couple that with the [email protected] email service (check out www.hz.com, by the way) and you've got a pretty good wireless communication solution for cheap (and small!).

Anyone else think this is a good idea?

I have heard about the Springboard that receives pages, but you apparently need a modem to send messeges. A true two-way pager would be very cool.

Other than the reference book board that I mentioned in another post, I think this is the first springboard I would buy. I'd like to use my Visor to recieve and send email or pages without having to hook up a modem, and a two way pager would be the perfect way to do this. For offline web browsing, Avantgo would be good for now, though eventually a true wireless board would be great for realtime browsing.

Another form of this would be to use the Bluetooth technology and have relay units in common places. Libraries, coffeehouses, subway stations, offices, boardrooms, etc. could have Bluetooth "proxy" servers from which wireless email or the web could be used. This is a lot more limited in range, but smart positioning of the servers could be great.

I will buy it too. Just like Motorola Page Writer 2000 in the springboard,
less power hungry.

Thumbs up

A two-way pager springboard is the first I would buy, as well. 2-way e-mail is way more important than web browsing on a little screen. As noted, there are services like hz.com that let you get a lot of the same info. as PQA/WAP will, plus you can check
out the 'Internet by e-mail FAQ' at http://www.faqs.org/faqs/internet-s...cess-via-email/
to find even more services via e-mail.

Someone PLEASE make a 2-way springboard module!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)

A long time ago , Glenayre announced they would make wireless solutions for the Visor. Their major products are 2-way pagers. InnoGear may also make one at some point.

Well, if anyone is reading this thread as market research...sign me up too. I would spend my money on a two way paging springboard. Couple that with a Gotype keyboard and you are set..

I'd be interested too as long as it was available in Canada.

As a further example of bad customer service from the people making the 1-way pager, I emailed both Innogear, and the place they selected as the 'exclusive' distributor of paging services to ask if I would be able to use the product in Canada.

Neither place bothered to respond to me.

Thus the answer is probably not, and exclusive agreements are garbage that lock out potentially large markets.

To wit, the population of Canada is 30 million, I don't think many US companies would want to sell everywhere but the state of California for example.

Question

Bismark,

I don't disagree with your assertion that these products and services should ideally be available in Canada (and preferably, globally). I don't think it would be a problem to distribute hardware and software, but I wonder whether the service is an issue. How does Canada regulate their telecom industry? There may be difficulties for American companies to operate in Canada.
I hardly think that pager/cell/PCS/etc. companies CHOOSE not to go after the Canadian market. Do you know if there are many telecom. companies that offer wireless services seamlessly across both the U.S. and Canada?

I also wanted to add that there do currently exist 2-way paging solutions, but these require a separate 2-way pager and connect to the palm/visor via IR:
http://www.infobeam.net/
http://www.jpsystems.com/beamlink/

Also, James mentioned Glenayre's possible 2-way paging solution, but I'm not sure that they are planning an actual springboard, since Glenayre's 2-way pagers are used in both of the above IR-based 2-way paging solutions.

The original news article at http://www.visorzone.com/news/glenayre.htm does not mention anything about springboards.

The only thing that Glenayre has ever said is this press release. It does not mention a springboard module, but I don't know what else it could be.

The reference by InnoGear is in the InnoGear Q&A article that I did.

Everyone go read James' news article on the new Glenayre 2-way pager announcement! http://www.visorcentral.com/news.php3?id=292

Now that Glenayre has announced a TWO-WAY pager module (that even receives pages when not connected to the Visor!), Innogear had better accelerate their plans for 2-way, or they may get left in the dust. If we belive the press release, Glenayre's pager module will be available in July, and Innogear has said its ONE-WAY infomitt pager would be available by 'summer'.

On the other hand, given the vaporware-laden and on-time-delivery-challenged nature of this market, we may be lucky to get our hands on either of these in time for Christmas!

Talking

Yap, this would be the first thing I would buy for my OVD(which i haven't even recieved yet, ordered 2/18 ). I'm a medical student and start my clinical rotations this summer. I know i will be carrying my visor and that i will need some form of a pager. Having both in one package would be awesome and the ability to recieve extended messages, save, edit and then reply/send info right on the spot makes for great functionality!
