I had to do a hard reset this morning. After syncing initially, I was surprised to find some applications had automatically be reinstalled while others had not.

Why don't all applications get installed again automatically?

Installed Automatically: AvantGo, Diddlebug, Mirror, Defender, PAL, several hacks (but not Hackmaster), etc.

Not Installed: Hackmaster (although as soon as I installed it, several hacks were already there!), Ecoconfig (although Ecehack had been installed automatically), etc.

Whats up? What are the rules behind this?

Well, Rolando, I'm not sure what the rules are....I'm always in the habit of breaking them anyway.

Typically, data files (database files, pref files, etc.) are stored for backup on your computer. On a win9x machine they're at:

C:\Program Files\Palm\*username*\backup

The files at this location are the ones that reload when you sync for the first time after a hard reset.

There is a program called BackUpBuddy:

$29.95 and you never have to worry about it again.

OR, you could just drop copies of the other apps you want to have re-installed automaticaly into that \backup folder mentioned above. That's what I do and it works great.

If you're on a Mac, I don't know exactly where the backup data is kept.

Gotta throw in my vote for the backup module here. I felt perfectly safe with BackupBuddy for a while and I still use it. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that the age old saying "you can't take it with you" often rings true.
