Congrats...

We had a 7lb 12 ouncer 2 months ago.

It's cliche to say, but it REALLY does put everything in a much different perspective.

Here's the 'new father' tips I learned over the past two months:

1) Buy a couple vats of 'bag balm'. It takes care of Diaper rash like nothing. (You can get them at your vet or most large pharmacies).

2) Never wear a good shirt (the kid will puke on it).

3) Take the baby as much as you can from your wife, as she needs a lot of breaks.

4) Take a lot of pictures...you can't have enough of them.

5) Tell your wife she looks great.

Other than that, I'm just winging it and learning a LOT each and every day.

oh yea, 6) Enjoy every minute of it!

Congradulations. - now corss your fingers and hope that he wants to be just like me when he gorws up or better yet, is jsut like me.. oh wait - you would probably think that was a bad thing

Homer - Congrats on your new arrival as well. Thanks for the advice as well, I've got two other little girls, but advice is always welcome! By the way - you don't know how right you are about taking the baby from mama - I travel frequently and feel that my job is stressful during the day and then I'm somehow humbled when I speak to the wife at night about her trials of the day.

Mark - I found some blue bubble gum 'It's A Boy' cigars at the hospital wandering around looking for something to drink this morning - will a pic suffice?

Miradu - Sorry pal, he already has a legacy to live up to! J/K! All I can do is offer him (and my other children) lots of love, food and most importantly - time, and see what develops - kinda like a polaroid, huh.

Congratulations!!! He is a real cutie!!! I second the comment about never wear a good shirt. I don't know how many times I went to work only to have a colleague point out that my son or daughter had left a present on my shoulder! (I think a couple of ties also took a hit!)

Another piece of advice. When changing the diaper, open the front and quickly close it. Then count to ten and change the diaper. The cool air usually results urination. Following these simple instructions will keep you from getting wet!!!

Congratulations! He is a squidge (squeezable + doll)!

Another piece of boy advice/ trivia. he's more likely than his sisters to pee right through his diaper! All three of my boys did that. Some diapers are actually better at coping with this phenomena than others.

See if you notice when/if his actions regarding playing differ from his sisters. My boys had a lot of gender neutral toys, but always ended up either using them as guns or vehicles. My friend has one daughter and she's named all of the Hot Wheels she inherited from her much older brother!

Once again congratulations and tell your wife she's done a magnificent job!

Congrats from me as well. I've got two boys, ages 4 and 2 and I strongly echo the caution about changing diapers. I swear they aim at your head on purpose, the little devils.

Here are some more tips:

ALWAYS!! cover him when you are changing his diaper...if not, you WILL get peed on at some point. Guaranteed!!!!!!

Take even more pictures and videos. We have some friends who had a boy last Jan. The dad bought a Sony digital camera 2 weeks after he was born. Since then he has taken almost 1200 pictures of the baby!! And that doesn't include several hours of video footage!!!

Take the baby from your wife often so that he gets used to being loved and held by both parents.

Take him with you when you run errands. My son and I have had lots of good father/son moments together in the car just running errands.

Start a savings account for him now!

Start a food bank now so that you will be stocked up for when he hits his teen years!!!!!!!

Don't worry about the littlest one, soon he will be the terror of the household (I'm judging that on how quickly my youngest was able to put the "fear of Martin" in his big brothers. seeing as how you have girls (right?), they'll probably just dress him in frilly clothes and stuff like that. Heh. I guess you do have to worry....

Teen years? My son is 9 and he eats from the time he gets up until the time he goes to bed. They eat so much more than girls, though don't fool yourself, those gals can eat like nothing you've ever seen when they become teens too! Like visor empowered says, not only do you need a savings account for your children you need to start a FOOD savings account for when you have to restock the frig every 3 days!
