PLEASE STOP!!! This is not the pick on Warman thread, nor is it the Warman promotes his product thread. This thread was started in the ACCESSORIES SECTION for the sole purpose of screen protectors. Listen, I loved the OFF TOPIC screen protectors disscussion. But just because this one has the same name and the other one was closed does not under any circumstance give anyone the right to change the topic of this thread in the appropriate section.

screen protectors

I don't want to get into the middle of whatever fight is going on up there, just wanted to add my feelings.
I use Mr. Warmans screen protectors, thought they worked much better than the writerights that I had, they did seem to dim my vision.
Haven't tried making a homemade one,although I don't think I would want to with the cost of the products I'm trying to protect.

Look, we don't need to rehash all of the patent talk AGAIN. Bill, quit saying "Thank you" every time someone posts. If you want to talk about how great your product is, fine. Don't talk about the patent here. Make an Off Topic posting called "VSPS Patent" and talk about it to your heart's content.

Boycotters, don't post the Stop Warman picture here. It's flamebait and is asking for trouble. I like the pictures in signatures and postings, and don't want to disable pictures because of your zeal.

HAH! Sharp as a tack, that one!

My two cents...
Up until today I have been using overhead transparency sheets cut to a size to slip under the edges of the bezel, then a thin film of olive oil as suggested by Hardwire (it really does work well - the stylus glides wonderfully.)
Upside: Good protection, no dimming or blurring, nice stylus "feel."
Downside: scratches quickly (even with the oil,) very reflective, so glare is a problem, although not much different than an unprotected screen.

Starting today, I am once again trying the clear vinyl, this time applied with the silicone lubricant recommended by Visorholic.
So far, application was definitely easier with the lubricant, and almost all the little bubbles squeegee'd out with my trusty blockbuster card - although a few remain. I can probably do better with practice.
Extremely clear - no dimming or blurring at all. Slight texture has reduced reflectivity and glare. "Feel" is slightly rubbery, with more drag than I am used to (and I did rub a little oil on the surface, too,) but this seems to have improved my graffiti recognition in the bargain!
Too early to tell, but I'm going to keep using it through at least one change...

Keep those ideas coming!

Hey,

I also tried the Warman screen protectors, & I like 'em.If anyone has a problem with that, too @#!*%!? bad, get a life and let it go. Their cheaper than Writerights ($25.00!! please, its a piece of plastic people!!!) and they last along time. Granted Warman is not giving away but in a world of WAY OVERPRICED PDA accessories, their reasonable.

I appreciate the compliment. I Just wish I had thought of these protective shields first! Seems everyone uses one type or another! Including the homemade ones.
With working in La Jolla I could have probably got lots of backing.

It's a good thing, I don't know why you guys insist on fighting about it.
I said what I said about my experience because it's the same thing as supporting a company that has good, quality products and has always treated you well.
If you'd like to discuss GE I like them too,just bought a frig from them. I'll take Coca Cola over Pepsi any day.
Or does loyalty to a company that has done well by you not count for anything anymore in these modern times!

On the subject of companies that have always treated people well, I've never heard anyone complain about PilotRites. Well, except for the people who couldn't get them when they went out of business (but we can't talk about why). AND they were run by people who knew something about their own product.

As for the price of WriteRights, since one pack properly trated will last longer than you're likely to be using your Visor, why quibble over a price difference that'd maybe get you a lunch at Dennys?

home made protectors

I've been using a home made protector made from vinyl purchased in the fabric department at Wal-Mart. The cost for one square yard was something like 87 cents and that works out to well less than a penny a piece. I've been using the same one for over a month. It's getting a little dull in part of the grafitti area but I'm still able to write fine and it didn't seem to dim the screen at all. I like the feel of it very much and don't have the desire to try anything else even though I could afford to buy whatever I wanted. It's just a little tough trying it with a razor blade and wish I had a good paper trimmer.

Try Sheet Protectors

Here's another option for a screen protector.

My first attempt was with tranparencies, but they scratched too easily, and my stylus does not glided smoothly. I was extremely pleased with the next material I tried. I made ScreenProtectors from sheet protectors..you know...those plastic sleeves that you could slide a sheet of paper into.

I began to make my own screen protectors in around mid-June, and so far been extremely pleased with them. Here's how I made them.

(I posted this info. on the girlandgeek boycott site and thought I re-post it here)

Material: Avery Heavyweight (3.3 mils) Diamond Clear Sheet Protectors. I brought a box of 50 for about $7 from OfficeDepot. This should be more than enough to produce a lifetime supply of screen protectors.

Once I placed the sheet on my Visor, the material is so crystal clear, you could hardly tell the protector is there. My stylus flows smoothly across the screen, no scratches, functions and feels like the naked screen.

There's my method:

1)clean off desk
2)use a sheet of graph paper (the smaller the grid the better) and measure out a 8.1 x 6.1 cm rectangle on the graph paper. You can measure as many rectangles on the graph paper as you want. I get about five on one sheet-that's ten protectors.
3)insert graph paper into the sheet protector careful not to winkle the sheet protector material
4)use sharp sissors and cut out the 8.1x6.1 cm rectanlges. Each retangle will yield 2 screen protectors!
5)I loosen the screws on the back of the Visor.
6)make sure there's minimal lint on the screen protector, place the protector on the visor screen and play with it until you could slide the edges under the visor's case.
7)tighten the screws, and you got a home made screen protector!

**The screen protectors that I made lasted for about a month of heavy use.

Oh by the way, the material of the sheet protector makes a big difference. I tried to use those really cheap sheet protectors, and they do not work nearly as well (flimsy and scratches easily) as the Averys which only cost about $7 for a box of 50.

I hope this is helpful.

I also hope that I didn't violate any patents out there! (...sorry I couldn't resist )

There's been a few reports of digitizer problems from people using slide-under-the-edge screen protectors, though possibly the extra step of loosening and retightening the screws might avoid that.

Another problem you might run into: plastic retaining screws aren't designed for too many cycles of retightening.

Other complaints

I was checking one of the other sites I go on about screen protectors and you should hear all the complaints over there!
Yet when you're dealing with a bootleg product and you can't get it anymore I guess you would complain.
I guess that's kind of the same thing as a druggie complaining his dealer got put in jail and now he can't get his drugs! Bummer!
And it's to bad that it's always the little guy that takes the heat and not the big wigs behind them! Who are actually doing what they want whether it's legal or not.
That's why I always try to thoroughly check the sources and companies that I do business with first!

Jacob: You research the companies you do business with? Look Warman's patent up... the original one, not the modified one dated after the first screen protectors for handhelds were already on the shelves... do some research.

On another subject: has anyone tried one of those sealed ruggedized cases you're supposed to be able to use your Palm through? Do they actually work?
