HELP! Must transplant Prism to VDX and back, NOW

I've been trying for a year to get my technophobe wife to dump her Palm IIIc in favor of a Prism (no matter what I've said she's been afraid she won't know how to use it). Finally, I've got my chance -- her IIIc is dead or dying and she asked me to pick her up a new "Palm".

In a fit of self enlightened generosity, I offered to reset my Prism, wipe it clean and restore her Palm onto it. I said I'd use my old VDX for a week or so while she tries it out.

Okay, I anticipate there are programs I won't be able to use without downloading monochrome versions of some color games and/or programs. And that could be a real pain. I also won't have use of PiDirect on my MemPlug. I can even probably return to life with just the basic functions of my Visor for a few days, if I need to.

But I'm more concerned with the basic HS patches I've added to the VDX and Prism being "restored" to a model they don't belong in. (Either the first time, or in a few days when I try to restore back to my Prism). I'm also wondering if there are any other problems I may not have anticipated.

She's needs this for work and so is desparate for the offered brain transplant to take place tonite or tomorrow. Has anyone ever tried this, or know of any problems?

Have you got a backup module? If so, I'd just try it (assuming you don't have anything important on the VDX). I'm betting that it would work w/o you doing anything. If you like, you could do a warm reset & delete the patches*, but I think that the HS patches are designed to know whether or not they're supposed to load on a given machine (ex. when I switched from a VDX to a PLAT, I forgot to unload the patches, but they caused no conflict.)

No Backup Mod? get a trial copy of Backup Buddy, and do the same thing...

Most color apps that I know of work fine in a grayscale device, but again, I don't know if it's worth your time to research every app you've got to see if they have separate color and BW versions. Again, if it were me, I'd just try it.

*Warm reset: reset while holding the "up" button. Delete the patches & then do a normal, soft reset.

I have backed up my VPR to the backup module and restored it to my VDX. Some problems have occurred - mainly Eyemodule won't work on the VDX. Also if I try to use my Visorphone on the VDX, it causes repeated fatal errors. Everything else works fine, though. Good luck.

Oh, yeah, the Eyemod1 software has 2 versions, one for the VDX and solo, and one for the rest. The VDX/solo version is on the module itself, while the rest is on the website. You can't use the VDX/solo on higher visors and vise-versa.

I can't speak to the vphone problem.

Thanks for the info, guys. Like you, Dietrich, I was pretty sure I was going to go ahead and do it anyway, but it's always good to get some feedback first.

I've got Backup Buddy, and can also use the PiDirect Backup. Since I bought the PiDirect I haven't used my 8mg module, and I can back up to that to, though not as seamlessly as with the backup module.

As for the color issues, It seems like most of the games and things I've been buying these days have separate color and monochrome versions. I guess I'll see. I didn't recall whether/that the VDX was greyscale, I thought not.

I really hope she likes the Prism, then we can share all of the modules I've got. Right now I almost feel guilty when I take one out and use another (8 meg, Audible, MemPlug, modem, Magellan, not to mention the keyboard and power back up). Plus I can more easily justify new ones ;-)

...or hold out with the VDX until either the wireless modle or color edge come out??
