Question New PDA

Hey Ya'll! I'm new at this so I was hoping that you could help me pick out a new PDA. I want a color screen, at least 8 meg, internet access, and compatablity with all the other progams out there. I was looking at the Visor Prism and that is probably what I'm going to get.

Thanks,

AOJJ

Sounds to me like you have made up your mind. The Prism is an awesome PDA. I loved mine the whole time I had it. Considering the current price for them, it would be tough to beat.

The major drawback for me was the inability to view the screen outdoors. While it could be done, it certainly took some work. I finally upgraded to the CLIE760 and I love this PDA.

As for Internet Access, the Prism offers the most options. Considering the available modules you could have wired or wireless access easily.

You might run across a few apps that have compatibility issues with Color and OS3.5, but those should almost all be resolved by now.

I would say go for it, I am sure you will love it.

I would Recommend the Prism...Butt I don't really know what your looking for or the way or reason you would use it.

You said 8mb color???? With just that I say the prism, you get the biggest bang for your buck.

As for me I am getting the Palms M505. (I have an edge now).

Butt if you have the money and Want an all purpose PDA, get the Clie 760. Its mind blowing.

The thing is to figure out your need. You will read reviews, Read message boards and ask people, and you will only get what their needs.
You will hear people complain about the prism's battery life and not being able to see the screen outside.
You will hear complaints about the Clie's dust in the screen and Sony's horrific customer support.
You will hear People complain about the M505's crappy screen and its hotsync problem.
Plus another complaints about anything else. Just remember for any Pda you will choose you will sacrifice something.
Just try to all people opinions and find out what you can do without and you will find the pda for you
good luck and happy holidays

PS. or you can wait for the Handera color device to come out!!!!

Culo makes some really valid points.

In fact, I started with a Visor Deluxe about a year and a half ago. At the time, the only color PalmOS device available was the IIIC. I was not about to pay $450.00 for a PDA when I had no idea if I would even use it.

Of course, I became an addict instantly. When the Prism came out and was available retail, I went for it. Then the CLIE760 came out with a Reflective, HiRes Screen, MP3, and a MemorySlot. Pretty much everything *I* wanted. So far, I have been nothing but happy.

But, the truth is, there is not one thing it will do that I cannot get for my VisorDeluxe. I would miss the screen, but the Deluxe will do everything else.

The point is, if you have never owned a PDA before you might find you are better served starting with a cheaper model. Make sure that it is something you are going to use. If you can live without color you can pick up a VisorDeluxe for around $100.00. You can also get a CLIE S320 for $169.99. It has OS4.0 and a MemoryStick Slot. There is also the Palm M125 which includes an SDSlot for memory expansion.

I would definately suggest going to a CompUSA or BestBuy and having a good look at the PDA counter. Then, if you have specific questions, ask away.

I agree with "GSr13568GHW998".
But dont ask the sales dude in the Blue shirt cause you probably know more than them..

I started off with the $250 Vdx too in September 2000. I bought the Bestbuy warranty. (spent $310 in all).

Well In August My Vdx Broke . So i Decided to get the Silver Edge. Paid only $40 bucks for the upgrade. (now $350)

Butt now i have pushed the 8mb limit, and the 8mb springboard and sled are getting to me. (due to my use of it for collge i hav to many notes, e-books, PDF chapters of my textbooks, and study guides). I would just get the 16mb upgrade but i dont want to void my warranty.
So i am going to the M505, for the main reason I am spoiled on the sleakness of the edge. I would get the Clie 760 or 610 butt i need size and battery life.

I kind of dont need color butt it will help me distinguish fonts and pictures and stuff. I only have two games on my edge...butt when this semester over will have alot and color would be awesome.
What i am saying is if you dont need color save your money and get a Neo. Skip on the M125. I say agian if you dont need color get the Neo and with the money you save buy the handcam and any other springboards you want.

I'm going to chime in as well. I started with a Apple Newton 3 years ago b/c it was cheap and I didn't think anything could replace my Franklin. Then moved to a Visor Solo, Visor Platinum, Visor Edge, Jornada 548, iPaq 3635, Got the Edge out again, Jornada 568, and finally settled on the Edge. I hadn't invested the effort in tailoring the device to my needs, just used out of the box software, but now with SilverScreen, DayNotez, DataViz's Documents To Go, & BueMe!, my Franklin hasn't seen the light of day in 3 mos...which is a HUGE deal for me.

My point, start small, cheaply with a basic device, if you want to move up after you know you'll use it, e-bay it, and get a nicer one.

Personally, I'm waiting until the new Handera Color unit comes out. Since I live in Des Moines, where Handera is located, I got some details on it in a chance meeting, and its worth the 2-3 mos wait until its released!

OK. I'm probably going to go with the Prism. I have a few questions though.

1. Will I be able to download whole movies (ex. Rush Hour) and play them on it?

2. Will I have a wireless internet connection with the Visorphone?

Thanks

1. Technically yes, but you would need an external memory adaptor and card, and probably about 128MB at least to fit it at good quality. The PalmOS really isn't designed for it, so you might want a Windows CE/Pocket PC device if this is really important.

2.Yes, any web browser, email client, etc. should work with it. (I say should because I do not have the visorphone).

OK, thanks. I will consider only a PalmOS becasue because unless I'm very mmuch mistaken (wouldn't be th first time!) it's compatible with all other PDA's.

well, I'm not really sure what you define as compatable...but the new PocketPC devices can beam to palm devices without any addt'l software, and vice versa.

As for the multimedia options...I'd have to recommend the PPC if that's what you most desire to use it for.

With PocketTV, & Win Media Player 8, you can do almost anything...except watch/play Quicktime's...I haven't seen a converter for that yet. You do pay a price in added complexity & price($) though. If I ever hear conclusively that their dust issues are solved, I'd consider them again. My Jornada 567 had them...

dorelse: Reliable shmeliable. Give it! ^_^

AOJJ: You can play movies from flash cards (like the MemPlug), but sound quality is a factor. The Visor family has weak, low volume speakers, and you can barely make out any speech from movies. It is possible to modify a Visor to take headphones, and that reportedly sounds quite a bit better, but I have not tried that on mine, so I can't verify this. The Clie 7x0C might actually be the best bet for this purpose, as it is geared towards having its own good quality headphone-based sound (for mp3 playing).

Additionally, rumour (*coughdorelsecough*) has it that a colour HandEra could be released within the next few months. Such an animal would be potentially ideal, for several reasons.

What I wanted to do (correct me if I can't) was just upload a video onto a memory stick and use headphones when I'm listening to the video. How big of a memory stick would I need and what kind/model would be the best for me? How much would it cost?

If all you ever wanted to use a palm for was watch videos, i would not get any pda! The video is very choppy and it might be hard to understand what to do to get it working if your new to all this.

But, i dont know how they look on ppc's since i have a clie 760, not a ppc. But pictures come out very nice.
