I don't think that Palm with need to change a single thing to "stay alive" in the handheld market. Palm devices are the most recognizable and trusted PDA on the market. Windows CE is bloated and slow, daVinci is inferior, Sharp Wizards are too old, and the Visor, though a great product, is still the "new guy".
Speaking for myself only, springboards don't impress me all that much. The fact is that you can only use one at a time, you'll have to lug them around with you, I don't think I would use them that much. I would also venture to say that there are probably a lot of folks out there just like me who want their PDA to hold contact info, play games, and hold a couple of e-books. I don't need it to play MP3's or locate my position via GPS.
Besides, with the PalmIIIc on the way, we'll have to see where the demand lies. If the IIIc has plenty of memory (at least 8mb) and isn't too bulky, you can bet that it will be the new "hot" product.
I guess you can summarize this post this way: Though Palm should continue to develop new products and innovations, they have little to worry about as far as market share.
Disclaimer: This is just my 2 cents. Don't flame me too bad. I think that Visors are great products. They have a few things I wouldn't mind on my Palm. It's also true that they have more memory for less money. However, at this point, I feel that more people go with Palm because it is the "proven" product.
