Innogrea and the zen of Palm
This post is only peripherally related to the discussion thread but...
I have no comment on Innogear or its products other than to say perhaps their initial plans for a plethora of multi-use modules was misguided. I mean, Palm and Handspring has always espoused simplicity and the springboard slot was meant to be a cartridge for the user to change his/her Visor's "personality" based upon the task at hand. Designing multifunction modules is difficult, expensive and ultimately defeating (IMHO.) I mean, if I wanted a do-everthing device that was unreliable and unintuitive, I would have bought a PocketPC or Revo. I personally prefer the modules with simple design goals (MP3 player, modem) and simple plastics over the modules that promise more, cost more and don't deliver.
For example, I like the aesthetic of the soundsgood, which does its basic function better than the minijam (again, IMHO, but the file transfer rate difference between the two says it all to me.) The soundsgood may not have the expandability of the minijam, but who doubts that the module is more thoroughly engineered and has delivered 100% on its promise? The minijam, impressive as it is, has not fulfilled its potential as of yet. I, for one, think Innogear may have bitten off more than it can swallow on the minijam, and may have trouble seeing serious profit on the device. In that same vein, I think Innogear may have overextended themselves with the sixpack and did what they had to do in cancelling the project. I hope their next generation of products, such as the innodrive series, is indicative of their newfound focus on simplicity. I also hope, as should we all, that this innovative and important company for the Handspring economy has what it takes to survive its current woes.
Just my two cents.
