URL to translate to english

Use this link to translate it to english:

(if you get a dialog box about saving a file, just cancel it, the translator site does that for some weird reason)

(the URL is all on one line)

Who cares? Just order it from someone who can import it. I want more RAM!!

Also, THANKS for that incredible translator link!! That's one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Definitely the closest thing to an actual Star Trek style translator device that I've used. I fed all kinds of Japanese web site I had never been able to read into it and it translated surprisingly well. It's aptly named for Gist, because that's exactly what it gives you; the gist of what they're trying to say. Cool!

Talking of more RAM, has anyone heard anything about the compact flash converter springboard that was discussed on these pages a couple of months ago?

How much is 10,000 yen? The translator sure has a weird way of interpreting price, at first I thought it was referring to the number of units that would be produced.

Translator Link

No problem! That Translator also works on Chinese web pages (set it for Japanese {weird I know, seems to work though}). As expected, It also does the other 5 major languages. Best translator I have found to date. I just wish it would do more of the less "popular" languages.

Yes! Finally more memory!!

I have been waiting for a 16 mb module for a long time. Now I can put all of my medical references in one module. I just hope the 16 mb is identical in operation as the Handspring 8 mb module.

10,000 yen

Not accurate to 100%. But 10,000 yen should be roughly $90us. But I havent check the exchange rates in a while so that is a plus or minus estimate.

It's alive and well and has a platoon of beta testers busily flushing the bugs out of the drivers and FileMover application. You can get up to date on the latest developments by reading the FlashAdapter forum message archives at http://www.egroups.com/messages/flashadapter-forum

Yeah, this 16Mb SB is a nice development, but at this point they can only run scared behind Mr. Kessler's already wildly successful project.
Even if the 16Mb is comparatively well-priced at $90 for an SB, it can't compete w/ non-proprietary CF cards that are still much cheaper per Mb, and can be read by PCs, cameras, etc.

While I heartily support dkessler's CF project (I've already built myself an adapter), there *are* limitations. I don't think it's possible to run apps directly off of the CF card; they have to be copied to internal memory first. Even with 'automove' functionality, you have to wait for the data or app to be moved, and you have to leave some free space on your visor to hold it. CF memory cards may also have slower access speeds and higher power consumption than springboard memory, though I'm not sure. Of course, the larger memory size, lower per-MB cost, and greater availability of CF cards makes them great for backup or storage of reference materials.

I thought there was some issue with the Palm OS that it couldn't handle more than 8MB. Anyone?

Thumbs up

I agree with Rob that if applications cannot be access directly from the card, it will be a severe limitation to the compact flash card. I loved Handspring's 8 mb flash card, I could run appliations and most data directly off the module seamlessly. If the 16 mb module can do everything the 8 mb can it would be perfect ! Anyone know when they are going to sell this thing in the US?

I read on Sony's Clie web-site that applications stored in the memory stick must first be copied to the Clie's main RAM then run this required twice the amount of free RAM on the CLIE as the application's RAM.

I'm not sure if this built-it-yourself module has the same limitation. Although, I've heard that the TRG pro CAN run applications directly off their compact flash.

rclayton:
yeah, I think I read something like that a while back...something to do with the amount of pins the module is plug into, but I think the discussion finally agreed that the #of pins can support 16mb's.

But I still can't find the place mentioning the price is 10,000 yen. What I see in both english and japanese version is to sell 10,000 units within the year.

With regard to the compact flash adapter, I was actually talking about the commercially produced one, of which there was a picture from a Japanese trade show. Any updates on its arrival?

Cool

According to Yahoo! Finance, the current exchange rate between US Dollars and Japanese Yen is 110.8. In other words, 10000 Japanese Yen is worth $90.20. If the 16 MB springboard memory module is 20000 Yen, then it is $180.40 in US Dollars.

Not quite. Like the Sony Clie and Dave Kessler's CF Adatpter, the TRG Pro uses an "automover" to move the application from the CF card into RAM whenever you run it.

NOTE: Dave's FAAutoMover does not yet exist. Last I heard he hopes to release it sometime in the first quarter of next year.

I also susspect the Innogear's new InnoDrive/MS will also use an automover. Probably licensed from Sony.

I think it highly unlikely that Innogear is licensing any automover software from Sony, because Sony has no automover software to license. MSAutoRun is an almost useless facility that's only vaguely like an automover like "AutoCF".
