Hello Folks,
Here's a real hair-brained question: When I'm on the road, does this thing work just like my laptop - I mean to hook up to the internet? Duh. I'm all confused about who and what Avantgo is - is it a server? A free provider? I mean - if I'm out in the boonies, for instance, where there is no "rcn" (my provider), do I just plug this groovy gadget into any old phone jack and it dials up Avantgo? Or does it have to dial "rcn?" What in the heck is this thing doing? There didn't seem to be any explanation whatsoever in the materials in the box, or installed on my Visor.

It's a Web browser that can sync to the AvantGo servers to get you specialized offline info. If you use it with a modem, it serves the same purpose as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

Aha! Okay okay I see. It's just a browser, that's all. So I would need to configure this modem with a new telephone number for each area I'm in when I'm on the road. And to tell it somehow the name of the provider in that area (since I see it says "dialing rcn" when it's connecting). Thanks! That's helpful. Do you yourself use this module, and/or Avantgo? I'm not totally thrilled so far - the modem seems to have difficulty holding the connection, and there doesn't appear to be any way to click on hypertexts (there ARE no hypertexts that appear on the visor screen, evidently - unless I've got it set up wrong somehow - but nothing is clickable).

And so if I am in an area that only has aol access (which I find in many areas), then I would run into a conflict because aol uses it's own browser, not Avantgo? And I would need to load aol software onto my Visor?

Which cell phone do you use? I have asked around (but not yet checked thoroughly on the net) and so far have been unable to find a way to connect the Visor to my Nokia. Do you yourself have national access, so you're not faced with long-distance charges when you travel out of your cell area? What, by the way, is the "IR" you mentioned? I'm crazy about my Visor, by the way. It sure is useful.

I am using a Nokia 8290 on VoiceStream. They have a North America Neighborhood plan where any call in the US is the same price. Depending on your market though, you might need DataStream which is $29.99 for 1500 data minutes.

The phone has a built in IR (InfraRed) port so I can connect wirelessly. I do need to use IrLink to connect since my VDX has OS 3.1. OS 3.3 and above users can do IR to Modem natively. You can find all the instructions on the IS/Complete website (link above). Hope that helps.
