Question

I recently noticed that my VDx hums when I enter a program that uses 2-bit greyscale. I think this is a recent development (i.e. I've not noticed it before), does anybody know what this might indicate?

I hope my VDx isn't on the way out!

My BVD does the same thing. I'm not too concerned about it because I can only hear it if I listen closely.

The Humming is normal. If you try turning the back-light on you'll notice the humming gets louder, and then quieter again when the backlight is turned off. Pay no attention to it.

We went through this back in Novemeber.

Why does a Visor Deluxe hum?

Because it doesn't know the words.

Most LCD's are affected by this, especially when backlit. My Timex Ironman watch sings like a canary when I turn on it's backlight. My VDx gets musical when the contrast is way up as well as when the backlight is on.

A long time ago, there was antoher discussion about this very subject. If I can track it down, I'll post a link. In the meantime, I think it's safe to say that this humming isn't a problem that needs to be worried about, per se... an annoyance, perhaps.

Post Hum

The power supply is the cause of the hum.

Yeah, it's either the power supply or the actual backlight, because I have several clocks that come with a backlight and they all make this really quiet squeal when you turn on the backlight. My 2meg Visor only squeals with the backlight. Oh well....

you guys are lucky! i can't use my backlight anymore! Everytime i turn it on there's a high pitched squeal that is so loud, my ears ring for a good hour afterwards!!

i've been kicked out of concerts and a few dance clubs for turning on my visor's backlight and drowning out the sound.

I've had huge groups of people that live near airports come to my door suggesting i stay out of their neighbourhoods.

and to top it off, the other day while walking down the street, i had a jack-hammer operator stop working and scream at me for hurting his ears!

i'd be happy if i were you, humming is nothing!

The backlights used in these things actually run on AC power. Since only DC is available (batteries), an inverter is used to supply power to the backlight. Both the voltage and frequency requirements are typically high for electroluminescent materials. The high voltage requirement dictates a step-up transformer, creating the hum on some units (the ones that don't know the words). The high frequency (e.g. 3kHz) requirement ensures that, unfortunately, any hum will be really annoying.
