problems with Palm Desktop beta for Mac OS X and NFS homedirs
I went through a lot of hassles to get the Palm Desktop beta (4.0b77) working on my office machine. Hopefully this will save someone from going through the same hassle...
At work, my home directory is mounted as an NFS volume from a file server. Palm Desktop, like some other Carbon apps, has a major problem with this; It won't let you create any Palm Desktop users, which results in complete inability to HotSync or do anything useful! If you have your home directory mounted from an NFS server and want to install the Palm Desktop beta, I recommend performing the following steps BEFORE attempting to install the beta:
1: In the Documents folder inside your home directory, create a new folder named "Palm".
2: Somewhere on your local disk, create another directory named "Palm". I created /Library/Palm and that seems to work fine.
3: Inside that second new Palm directory, create yet another directory, this one named "Users".
4: Finally, click on the new Users folder and drag an alias of it into the Palm directory you created inside of your Documents directory. To drag an alias, hold down both option and command while dragging (the cursor gets a little curved arrow added to it as a visual cue).
Now, when you look in your Documents/Palm directory, you should see a Users directory, with a little curved arrow on the icon indicating that this is an alias.
Now you should be able to install the Palm Desktop beta for OS X. Hope this is helpful!
