Seriously I had three cars in mind for you.
#1) CRX : Only a two seater which is rough if its your only car but it is sweet. When I bought my 1987 Mustang LX 2.3 Liter, 4 Cylinder, 5 Speed Manual Hatchback (yes just like the one you have posted about), I seriously considered a CRX. It came down to the fact that I was in college and wanted to transport more than just myself and one other person and I also needed to get my stuff back and forth to school.
BTW, I liked my Mustang, I swapped the wheels for the bigger 15" GTs and it was well worth the price, it improved the handling immensely but there is not getting over the fact that it is a mediocre performing car, bad in snow, and higher insurance regardless of engine size just because it is a Mustang!
#2) Mazda Protege AWD Hatch : this is a nice car and the only made the AWD in the late 80s and early 90s. Has an aggressive look, a little pep, and the benefit of AWD which will serve you well in the great white north! **I would buy a new Protege tomorrow if they still made the AWD version**
#3) Mazda RX-7 : If you are going to consider the CRX and its two seats, you should also consider this baby. It unfortunately has rear wheel drive but this car performs and you will have a hard time killing a rotary engine!
