Palm's "MyPalm" Portal Discontinued

I received the message below today. I was somewhat saddened by it, as my wife and I have used the online service to consolidate our household and business calenders. Yet another case of a valuable web-based service being discontinued....

I tell ya, if I were an IT professional I would be hard pressed to do something like itegrate a salesforce automation program using a vendor like Avantgo. I can't even imagine going to my COO or CEO and seriously suggesting making a major investment in web-based implementations of almost anything.

Of course its not like I am paying for any of these services either ; )


Beginning this Thursday, January 10, 2002, Palm, Inc. will
no longer offer the Date Book, Address Book, To Dos,
Reminders and Memo Pad features - often called PIM for
"personal information management" - associated with the
MyPalm(tm) portal. We regret any inconvenience this causes
you.

Also ceasing operation on January 10 will be the Date Book
Update and Free Time Viewer applications on MyPalm(tm)
mobile portal. All the other functions of the MyPalm
mobile portal for use on your Palm handheld will continue
to operate and, indeed, will be incorporated into future
products.

Beginning January 10, all PIM data will be permanently
deleted from the MyPalm web site and will no longer be
accessible. Until that date you will be able to retrieve
data from your Date Book, Address Book and To Dos by
syncing your MyPalm account to your Palm OS device or
desktop PIM such as Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes or
Palm Desktop. If you have not already installed the
MyPalm Sync software, go to your account and click the
word "Sync" on the top toolbar to download the software
and to read instructions on how to use it.

After January 10, subscribers to the Palm.Net(r)
wireless service (Palm VII and VIIx users) will still
be able to access their web email and Palm.Net accounts
by going to:

MyPalm members who do not have wireless Palm.Net
subscriptions will no longer have "@palm.com" email
accounts, but may retain any emails by forwarding them
to another account before January 10. In order to have
a web-based email account with Palm you must subscribe

We would like to recommend Yahoo Calendar as a substitute
service:

Yahoo Calendar synchronizes calendar, address book, to dos
and memo pad data with your Palm handheld as well as with
Outlook or Notes. You can sync data from your MyPalm
account to your Palm handheld as well as to Outlook or
Notes, and then follow the instructions on the Yahoo site
to synchronize that data to Yahoo:

Hmmm

Did people actaully use this service? I guess the days when you can get and use everything for free on the net is long gone.

Nickle and Dime

It seems that people will be nickled and dimed to death. The $5/mp here and the $20/mo there does not seem like much...but it adds up.

Match Made in Hell

I am Outlook-dependent, and my wife needs to use a product at work called "Meeting-Maker". This Meeting-Maker product is apparently web-enabled so we have contemplated setting up a personal account for "us" through her server at work. There is an Outlook conduit available for Meeting-Maker, which may or may not make this a painless transition. We definately want to avoid a situation where either of us has to rekey meetings into a schedule simpy so we can share.

Is anyone else using Meeting-Maker? Aside from the OUtlook conduit, I have had nothing but bad experiences with scheduling conduits; redundent entries, mind-numbing synch times, etc. I am eager for a third party app that will actually work as fluidly as the Palm-developed Outlook conduit that comes with Handspring and other Palm OS products.
