Question

I've tried for 2 days to get my VDX working with Win98SE via USB. After following all of the different suggestions here, I stumbled upon a thread talking about the Asus P2B-DS motherboard, which I own, and problems with the VDX.

I tried it on the USB port on my Dad's Dell Laptop. Guess what, my unit works flawlessly. Try it in my computer. No Dice. Can other owners of the Asus P2B Dual SCSI let me know if they got it working and if so, how??!?! Can I contact someone at Handspring to fix this problem? Or are we SOL if we own this motherboard? Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a asus P2B-S motherboard, actually..i didn't set anything to the USB. I believed win98SE should get your USB automatically!!! if not you should try to install the USB.
hope this help.

Good luck

You seem to have missed my question.
The USB on my Asus P2B-DS(thats DUAL SCSI, not just SCSI, DUAL as in TWO CPUS) works fine. My USB intellimouse has never had a problem. I believe there is an incompatiblity with the Visor Deluxe(VDX) and my motherboard. The fact that you have a P2B-S doesn't mean anything its a totally different board. The VDX works fine on another computer I have access to, which is comfirming the fact that its an issue with the P2B-DS.

There have been a few posts about the VDX and P2B-DS issues in the "General" forum. I'm trying to find out if there is a fix yet for my motherboard.

Thanks for your time.

Jenner,

I have a P2B-DS and was also worried about getting the USB port to work. To my surprise, it worked flawlessly on W98 (with the VDX being the only reason W98 is installed).

What BIOS revision are you running? Is the USB port enabled in BIOS (I know, I know, I had to ask! )

A great resource for our mb's is the asus newsgroup.

Let me know if you'd like me to confirm some settings/driver versions for you.

Regards,

Thanks for your offer of help. I am currently running version 1010. I have 1012 on my hard drive and think I'll go check out asus.com and see about an even newer version. What BIOS revision are you running?

What order did you install everything? Thanks for your time/help!

Eeech. Order? Hmm. Let me take a stab at that (it's been a while).

I believe I let Winblows use all of it's drivers, but I vaguely remember the caution sign next to the USB root. I *think* I then disabled it in BIOS and then re-installed W98. Removing the USB root and rebooting might have the same affect.

I didn't touch it again until I got my Visor (the only reason I installed W98) where I then re-enabled the USB port in BIOS re-booted and all was well.

I am using USB port #1 and I am running the latest BIOS that was available about 2 months ago (1011, I think!).

One more obvious thing to check is that you do not have any IRQ conficts. Make sure all your devices in 'device manager' reportedly function normally.

Next time I sync (re-boot), I'll scribble some more concrete information down for you.

Don't give up, it works and it works very quickly using USB!

This may be a dumb question (and it really doesn't have anything to do with your problem of syncing your Visor), but what's the use of having a dual CPU system, then running Windows 98 on it? Does the system only have one CPU? Or are you dual booting Linux/NT on it?

Just curious.

Lightbulb

Yes I dual boot. Right now its Dual P3 500 w/256meg ram all scsi dual booting Windows 2000 and Windows 98 SE. As of right now I believe there is a delay in the Win2k USB/Visor Deluxe drivers. Until I hear about someone else running a VDX on Win2k, I'll just save myself the headache and run it on Win98SE. Oh wait! I can't even run it on Win98SE right now....hmm maybe I SHOULD try it on Win2k! LOL. I'd like to think that if I am smart enough to buy a dual motherboard and cpus, I'm start enough to run the right OS. ;

Jenner,

Here is some more meaty information for you:

* BIOS v1011
* PNP OS = NO
* IRQs in use by ISA are set (I have two)
* two items under "Universal Serial Bus Controller" in W98:
* Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Univeral Host Controller (IRQ 9)
* USB Root Hub
* provider: MS
* date: 5-11-1998

You also mentioned that you can't seem to get W98 installed - what problems are you having? Have you tried the asus newsgroup?

vjmurphy, I too am somewhat dissappointed that I had to install W98 on my dual 450II PC, and I will be happily removing it just as soon as USB support is available for Linux. On a side note, the installation of Linux was far easier than both W98 or NT - it recognized all my hardware and started to use my 2nd CPU without any patches or reconfiguration (unlike NT).
