PDA OS Fanaticism in Philadelphia
By: bookrats @ 06:40 PM
A rather interesting article on the Brighthand site by the founder/main author, Steven G. Bush, regarding a display of anti-Palm fanaticism at a Pocket PC Summit in Philadelphia.
An analyst of Gartner Dataquest who was analyzing the PocketPC market was lambasted on-stage by one of the event's organizers, for commenting that Palm was in a "favorable place" in the market. See the article for details.
I tend to credit the source (Bush); while I disagree with him here and there on subjective what-do-you-want-in-a-PDA concepts, he aims for a balanced view on PDAs -- and certainly no one could call him a Palm apologist. Brighthand tends to get more PocketPC than Palm discussions in my experience.
Finding fanaticism in, of all things, PDA choices is just, well... weird. Particularly on such a high level (i.e., event organizers.) I'd be just as bothered if the advantages of PocketPCs were trashed at a PalmSource event.
Guess it just makes me appreciate the generally open minds folks have here at VC. Compare the general level of Palm-vs-PocketPC brick-tossing in the comments over at PalmInfoCenter (or Sony-Vs-Palm) to Dave Kessler's recent disspelling of several PocketPC misconceptions in this forum. Folks here seems to want facts and informed opinion over flame wars. The "Oooh, look at that!" enthusiasm is not limited to Palm OS PDAs.
Maybe VC's motto should be "Geeks Looking Forward Into The Future" (with appropriate 1930's style revolutionary artwork).

We live in a strange world... I am happy that the VC/TC reader are well behaved.
Palm vs PPC
Handspring vs Sony
MS vs Mac
MS vs Linux
MS vs world
Miradu vs Spellchecker

These are all discussions that can get ugly real quick...
But luckily there are still people out there that can see the relevance of the discusion and behave politely even if they disagree with each other...
I hereby would like to thank all the VC/TC reader for acting in this nice way!
We show the world online fora can be friendly..

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

Visor owners (and former Visor owners) have an unfair advantage. If we were "sheep" (zealots are generally just loud sheep) instead of a bunch of rational "free-thinkers" we probably would not have broken away from the herd to pick the Visor in the first place

And you can see the journey (or evolution
) continue, as the Visor users go on to buy Clies or Zauruses (is that the plural of Zaurus?).
[I am not free of predjudice, though, or I would have added PocketPC to the list above.]

I have a soft spot in my heart for Psion's -- sort of the same emotion I have for the Apple II computer. It was cool for what it did, not how it did it or how it looked.

My Zaurus has been serving me nicely except the paint comes off too easily. I'm debating whether or not to find some paint and turn it black unless I can find more of the grey stuff...
