Anyway, I beg to differ with your determination that handhelds fall into consumer electronics. That designation connotes more leisure or recreational rather than critical or productive application. We need a new designation...
Regardless, with consumer electronics (phongraph, 8-track, cassettes, CDs, VHS, LD, DVD, etc.) we see a considerable lifespan of each of those media in stark contrast to the springboard. Imagine if CDs were just introduced and you bought them for three years straight (oh, and did I mention that each CD was $50-100?), then Sony and all of the other CD player manufacturers started ramping down the production of CD players and started promoting a new standard. That's what the consumer electronics space would look like if it looked like the life of the springboard.
