Argh!
Not only did I decide to play it safe, I trusted Handspring.
Before ordering our handspring (my fiancee and myself) I called their tech support people and asked a variety of questions including: I saw on your website that win 95 and usb won't work, is that true even if I install the usbsupp file and have usb running normally otherwise?
They said it should work no problem.
Got my handspring dec 24th at 10 a.m. Tried installing the usbsupp.exe. to make a long story short: partial crash, backed up a lot of data, fdisk :~(, reinstall all but office and corel 8 (group license, my school has the disks -- so now I get to do heavy WP w/ Notepad, yay??) reinstalled usbsupp with no problem, day a half later call handspring back, ask the same question preceeded w/ "when I called before ordering. . ."
The handspring techie responded with "Oops."
Turns out there is no way to get it to work -- NSS. He did say one interesting thing though (besides that it would take 4-6 weeks to get a serial cradle) -- a user told him that a USB-9pin serial adaptor allows the USB cradle to act as a serial cradle. DOES ANYONE HAVE ONE OF THESE, or know where to get one? I've been searching online for the past 1/2 hour or so (circuit city, radio shack, etc.) to no avail. Does anyone know what if the wires inside two "extension" cables will match up and I can solder em together, seal w/ electric tape and go from there? (I'll have a 'pinto' version but if it works so be it.)
I also asked about using a palm serial cable/cradle. He said the software would work, but not the hardware. Does anyone know if any palmpilot cable will accept the handspring 8 goldtone interface section at the bottom of the vsr.
Thanks,
nb
