HP + Compaq = What for Palm?

With the industry looking not so favorably at the HP + Compaq merger; what do you think will happen to the IPaq and the Jordana? What does this mean for Palm and Handspring? With the seeming increase in mindshre of the PocketPC in corporate America, what does this do for those corporations who are now looking at 9 months to 3 years before the two companies are intagrated? Who will Microsoft now go to to promote their products?

I personally think this is a watershed event for Palm and Handspring.

If handspring plays it right they can use the merger of HP and Compaq in their (HS) advantage.
Because of the merger HP/CQ will have a lot of internal changes and probably cannot focus on the market for a while...

Handspring can use that time go grap a piece of their marketshare.
If they don't they might be in trouble because when all the dust has setteld HP/CQ could turn out to be a very strong competitor...

The merger will have little immediate impact at all on Palm or HS. My personal opinion is that HP will now target the iPaq squarely at the corporate market where it is already popular, and market their new Jornada's at consumers and other areas like the medical and education fields. But in the grand scheme of things, there will be very few ripple effects from this merger on the Palm economy.

Dreadful

HP has frequently been mentioned as a possible purchaser of Palm or Handspring. Don't see the fit? Frankly, it doesn't need to be a perfect fit when they could have scooped up the competition for a song (HP could write a check for either company...both actually... and paid cash) and see what happens.

The merger of Compaq and HP means that Palm and Handspring have one fewer potential buyer, and that they will face a larger competitor (think Goliath) that can pour hundreds of millions into developing the PDA sector. Now we see why 3Com divested itself of Palm...they could see the long term writing on the wall.

If Sony doesn't purchase Handspring or the Hardware division of Palm before Christmas it will mean that Handspring and Palm have been officially hung out to dry by the big boys.

Ideally, Apple would buy Palm and Motorola would buy Handspring.
